SUBJECT: Sensible drug testing bill receives hearing

Isn't it time we stop treating our children as criminals and forcing them to take drug tests without just cause?

A bill in the California Senate, S.B. 1386, would stop suspicionless drug testing of students and put other sensible restrictions on student drug testing. School officials would need a concrete, written reason to suspect a student before testing him or her. And students couldn't be singled out for testing based on their race, class, gender, or sexual orientation.

On Tuesday, testimony was taken on S.B. 1386 in the Committee on Education and Health and Human Services. The committee will complete the hearing and vote on the bill on Wednesday, March 31. So this is the perfect time for your legislators to hear from you: Please ask them to support S.B. 1386.

S.B. 1386, sponsored by Sen. John Vasconcellos (D-Senate District 13), would also prohibit drug testing without a parent's prior written consent. S.B. 1386 recognizes students' right to privacy, and it would prevent wasteful and ineffective spending on random drug tests.

I think they should be fighting for abolishment of student drug testing all together, but that's just my opinion. Children go to school to learn, what are they learning from this drug testing? That their personal privacy can be violated at any time by adults. I really don't believe children should be suffering from humiliation at the hands of adults through this drug testing. I think it should be up to the parents. If a parent wants to know if their child is using drugs and doesn't trust their own child to tell them the truth, then they should take the child to a family doctor to be tested privately and confidentially. Rather than waste money paying for drug testing in schools, put that money into the health care system, so that parents can get the real help they need.
But at least MPP is trying to protect children's rights somewhat. They sure do make it easy to help with the pre-written letters.

Better than thou hypocracy! I say if we test students lets test teachers too! Of course teachers should be getting alot more tests anyway. Ever take away a teachers 'teacher edition' text book? With some of them its like watching a goose wake up in a new world
I must add though, Ive had some great teachers, even in public school.
