| Drug Czar's Pot-Potency Claims Go Up In Smoke 5/29/09|Huffington Post| by Ryan Grim A newly released report about marijuana potency undermines previous claims by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) that the drug's potency has hit record highs. In May, the media ran wild with stories of highly potent pot sweeping the nation, as the ONDCP announced that their testing showed average marijuana potency had topped 10 percent THC-level for the first time ever. THC is the active ingredient in marijuana. "According to the latest data on marijuana samples analyzed to date, the average amount of THC in seized samples has reached a new high of 10.1 percent," reads the announcement by Gil Kerlikowske, the Drug Czar. But the full report is now available and it shows that the 10-percent bar is only crossed by throwing hash into the equation. Without hash, the average potency was 8.52 percent. The average potency of hash was 20.76 percent. The Marijuana Policy Project obtained the full report, which is produced by the Marijuana Potency Monitoring Project at the University of Mississippi. Connoisseurs would enjoy reading the whole thing, which is available here, as it breaks seizures and potency-measurement into "Buds," "Kilobricks," "Loose leaf," "Loose other," "Thai Sticks" and other categories. There is also debate over whether there is actually a problem with higher-potency marijuana, with advocates arguing that stronger pot means that users end up smoking less for the same effect, thus sparing their lungs. |

| Haha, wow. Still, this whole thing is just a scare tactic. Marinol is very potent and it's still non-toxic, so the whole potency argument is really ridiculous. Especially since you smoke less with higher potency, and smoke inhalation is really the only detrimental effect on health. And even that doesn't seem to cause many problems. But all of us here know that, just wish someone with influence could explain it.

| I keep reading statements like this and they simply are not true. Marinol is not 100% THC. Synthetic THC is the only cannabinoid it contains, but it's dissolved in sesame oil, which comprises the bulk of Marinol capsules. Pure THC the size of a Marinol capsule would probably render you unconscious.

| do previous potency studies also include hash? if they do then it is just more of the same, but if not then this is hugely retarded. |

| I really don't like the "pot is more potent nowadays" argument. To me it seems like a desperate attempt at swaying the opinions of baby boomers who smoked back in the day and realize that pot isn't that bad. They try to make it seem like weed is a harder drug today than it was in the 60s/70s so people who don't smoke anymore will think that maybe their opinions that pot is harmless are wrong and it's a cause for concern and side with the government. Am I right in thinking this?
