| Drug raid nets 5 at home in Franklin Twp. by Joe Tyrrell | April 13, 2004 | The Newark Star-Ledger An undercover narcotics investigation led to a raid Friday afternoon at a home on Hempstead Drive in Franklin Township, Somerset County, and the arrest of five men, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest. [Red: Heh, wonder where the name HEMPstead comes from ]Authorities identified Omar Alexander, 24, who lives at the address, as the leader of a ring selling cocaine and marijuana. According to a report filed yesterday in Superior Court in Somerville, an undercover officer from the East Brunswick Police Department arranged to buy cocaine from a man identifying himself as Alexander. When the undercover officer went to the house, Alexander said "one of my boys" would make the sale outside, according to the report by prosecutor's detective Francisco Roman Jr. Outside the house, Daaim Boykins, 23, of New Brunswick, handed over a substance believed to be cocaine, authorities said. Seeing officers approach, Boykins attempted to flee but was chased and captured. Detectives retrieved a bag that he threw into a Dumpster and said it contained cocaine. Officers arrested Alexander without incident at the front door and another man, Scott Roland, 21, of Princeton Junction, in the living room. Another man, Mark D. Robinson dove out a first-floor bedroom window, authorities said. After a brief struggle, detectives said, they arrested Robinson outside the house with a .357 Magnum Smith & Wesson handgun and plastic bags of marijuana and cocaine. Meanwhile, another man, Cho Savage, 19, of South Brunswick, went into the bathroom, flushed something down the toilet, and jumped out that window, authorities said. Officers said Savage later admitted that he flushed a marijuana "blunt." A K-9 search of the house located a safe, which was found to cocaine more baggies of marijuana and cocaine, as well as ammunition. According to detectives from the prosecutor's office, Franklin and East Brunswick police, the cocaine was valued at $4,500 and the marijuana at $1,600. [Red: Wow, saving society from a mere $4500 worth of cocaine and $1600 worth of marijuana. That's not even a half-pound!] Alexander, Boykins and Robinson all were charged with second-degree conspiracy and a variety of second- and third-degree drug counts. Robinson also was charged with firearms offenses. Superior Court Judge Edward Coleman set bail at $100,000 cash for Alexander and $50,000 cash each for Robinson and Boykins. Savage was charged with fourth-degree counts of obstruction and tampering with evidence. Coleman set his bail at $2,000 with a 10 percent cash option. Roland was charged with being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance, a disorderly persons offense, and released on his own recognizance.
