White House Drug Czar and Florida First Lady Columba Bush Unveil New Anti-Drug Advertising Effort

Initiative Addresses Marijuana Use Among Hispanic Youth
MIAMI, April 14 /PRNewswire

In an effort to educate and engage Hispanic parents in youth drug prevention, the nation's Drug Czar, John P. Walters, First Lady Columba Bush, and Director of the Florida Office of Drug Control Policy, Jim McDonough, today unveiled a new national Spanish-language advertising campaign. The ads are part of the Office of National Drug Control Policy's (ONDCP) National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign Hispanic outreach initiative, which includes news media outreach, community partnerships, and online and print resources aimed at parents and youth.

"Marijuana use is a serious problem for all young people, but we are particularly concerned about the high usage rates among Hispanic eighth graders, who are using this harmful drug at a crucial time in their lives," said Director Walters. "We know that parents are the most important influence in preventing youth drug use. These new ads demonstrate effective strategies for raising drug-free teens and our program gives Hispanic parents the resources they need to take an active role in drug prevention."

Among eighth graders, Hispanics tend to have the highest rates of past-year drug use for most illegal drugs, including marijuana, cocaine, and heroin. One in 10 Hispanic youth ages 12-17 reports using illicit drugs in the past month. Despite these figures, many Hispanic parents do not realize that their child may be at risk and aren't sure what they can do to make a difference.

The television, radio and print ads released today were created by Conill Advertising, an advertising unit of Saatchi & Saatchi focused on the Hispanic market, in coordination with the Partnership for a Drug- Free America. The ads, which begin airing nationwide this month, show teens asking their parents 'do you know who I am with?', 'do you know my friends?', 'do you know their parents?' The ads encourage parents to "involucrarse," or "get involved", and highlight their important role in drug prevention. The ads can be viewed online at www.MediaCampaign.org or www.LaAntiDroga.com.

"This important effort reminds Hispanic parents that all kids are at risk for using marijuana or other drugs," said Florida First Lady Columba Bush, who serves as the National Madrina for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). "Familia can be a strong force in protecting teens. By staying involved, asking tough questions and talking to teens about the dangers of marijuana, parents can help keep them drug-free."

"Marijuana is not a benign drug," said Director McDonough. "Research shows that marijuana can be addictive and lead to a host of health, social, learning and behavioral problems at a critical time in young lives."

[zombienote: Here's some research.]

As part of the Media Campaign's Hispanic outreach efforts, a bilingual booklet, Proteja a sus hijos de las drogas: Una guia para los padres/Keeping Your Kids Drug-Free: A How-To Guide for Parents and Caregivers, was released in October. The booklet, which incorporates culturally-appropriate information and resources, includes facts about marijuana and other illicit drugs and specific ideas, communication tips, conversation starters, and examples of the skills busy parents can use to prevent teen drug use. Free copies are available by calling the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol and Drug Information, (800) 788- 2800, (877) SIN-DROGAS (for Spanish) or through www.LaAntiDroga.com.

To reach a growing online Hispanic population, the Media Campaign also has an in-language Web site, LaAntiDroga.com, for Hispanic parents and adult caregivers. LaAntiDroga.com provides drug information, prevention strategies, and tips on raising healthy, drug-free children, along with advice from parenting and substance abuse prevention experts and other parents. Visitors to LaAntiDroga.com can sign up for a regular Spanish-language parenting tips e-mail.

In 1998, with bipartisan support, Congress created the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign with the goal of educating and enabling young people to reject illicit drugs. The Campaign is an integrated communications effort that combines advertising with public communications outreach to deliver anti- drug messages and skills to America's youth, their parents, and other influential adults.

[Suetaznote: The article mentions "drugs" and "illicit drugs" many times, but only once do they mention any other drugs besides marijuana, as you can see by the way I highlighted the word marijuana green and the 'other illicit drugs' in sienna. This is not a war on drugs, it's a war on marijuana. A cultural war on marijuana and now they are targeting the Hispanic population.]

I don’t know dude. Kids shouldn’t be doing drugs period. Eighth grade is a little young. That is like 13-14.

Just cause its not what they(gvmnt) say it is doesn't mean that you should smoke everywhere and every time. And if you do think that it is appropriate then you are in the minority.
Doc you are the pot equivalent of Sean hannity, a broken record. Just step it down a notch and you won’t turn off so many people. Even on smirking chimp you are out there.

Puff something a little less dank and maybe you won’t be so paranoid that everything is a conspiracy against marijuana smokers.

Any time I read anything John Walters has said I get this weird feeling like I don't know if I should gag or laugh. He really believes the sh*t he spouts and it astonishes me how ignorant and closed minded he is. I'd like to lock him in a room with Steve Kubby until he 'gets it'. I'd like him to say to Steve Kubby's face that there are no medicinal properties in marijauna.

What an insult to Hispanics. Will they target other minority groups or is it propaganda for Hispanics and then basic propaganda for everyone else? What about propaganda in rap?...redneck? surfer dude?

I agree, but lying to children isn't the way to teach them about drugs. John Walters does nothing but lie and it only teaches the children that they can't trust adults. Marijuana is not as harmful as what he makes it out to be and it needs to be separated from 'other drugs'. The truth about marijuana needs to be told, not lies that will further confuse them and develop distrust between the children and the adults. Once a teen tries marijuana and finds out for themself that it's not as bad as what they say it is, they'll realize they've been lied to.

Edit: I found the link for this opinion article in my inbox after I posted here.

Don't exaggerate marijuana dangers

Apr. 16, 2004 12:00 AM | Arizona Republic

Regarding your front-page story on Tuesday "Kids' drug of choice . . . Anything they can find in your medicine cabinet":

The question that needs to be asked is: Why don't children believe those who warn them about the dangers of drugs? The answer: Because when the drug war cheerleaders lie about or grossly exaggerate the dangers of marijuana, they lose all credibility.

When children find out that they have been lied to about marijuana, they make the logical assumption that they are also being lied to about the dangers of other drugs like methamphetamine, heroin and household inhalants.

A recipe for disaster. - Kirk Muse, Mesa

How many conservatives does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

yes, yes.. the whole "you're crazy if you believe that" routine..
telling a "patriotic American" that his system might be corrupt is like telling a "patriotic German" that the Holocaust really did happen..

they both have so little pride in their own lives, that they would ignore what the rest of the world is saying, because they're so afraid that a verbal attack on their nation is a personal attack on them

so to all those who think ANY GOVERNMENT can do no wrong, the rest of the world have a message for you:

SHOW SOME PERSONAL PRIDE FOR ONCE, OPEN YOUR EYES, AND STOP FORGETTING THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS STILL BEING RUN BY HUMANS JUST AS DUMB AS THE REST OF THE WORLD'S POPULATION!!!! THEY ARE NOT OUR GODS

this government worship has got to stop. some worship the red elephant, some worship the blue donkey.. and they scapegoat the nations' problems back and forth rather than finding a way to SOLVE them... perhaps we need another colored animal to "worship"? (how about a white scapegoat, or a green plant?)

btw, on a side subject, here's a hypothetical question for you..

If a nation (let's call them Canada, since they don't seem "evil") decided to oust a president by claiming "America has WMD's and has used them before" and decided to put "Canadian" soldiers on American streets to "protect us from terror", THEN decided to put "Canadian" politicians and take away Americans' right to choose their leader, do you think that would cause anti-Canadian sentiment?

I only ask because my uncle has been sent to Iraq for a year, despite being told he may retire July 1st. and it makes me sick to think that more people are dying in Iraq every day than when Saddam was in power, and i'm not in the mood to lose my uncle to a war that even he sees is a bad idea
