Pentagon to step up drug testing
UPI | April 21, 2004

Washington, DC, Apr. 21 (UPI) -- The military is going to step up its drug testing to once a year for every member, a Pentagon official said Wednesday.

Civilians who are subjected to mandatory testing will also be screened annually, said Thomas W. O'Connell, the assistant secretary of defense for low intensity conflict.

The military adopted mandatory random drug testing more than 20 years ago. Random drug tests generally reveal a less than 1 percent rate of drug use among the military, according to Pentagon statistics.

According to a 1982 worldwide military health survey, 28 percent of military personnel admitted using illegal drugs within the previous 30 days of taking the survey.

By 1998 that figure had dropped to 2.6 percent, according to Defense Department figures.

About 16 percent of American 18 to 25 year-old civilians admit to using drugs, according to a 2000 Office of Drug Control Policy survey.

[zombienote: All random, yearly, scheduled and random drug testing is a statement that YOU are GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT. And you are guilty again after you pass a test and walk out of THIER sight.

People who support drug testing as a "good thing" - every single last one of them - should have a black box in their car that can be read at anytime by any cop. If they have exceeded the speed limit - at any time in the last 3 months - they have broken the law and should have some sort of consequence. After all, the LAW is the LAW.

We should use every available technology and constitutional violation to ensure the people we work with and do business with NEVER exceed the posted speed limit. And, of course, all the profits from this device should be concentrated in the hands of a few politically-connected cronies..

It's absolutely no different than testing to see if somebody smoked pot a month ago.

Except that, unlike pot smoking, speeding actually can hurt other people.....]

Wow, that's a great analogy! Never thought of it that way. Though, we all know members of Congress and other political areas are notorious for speeding, so this idea might not catch But wouldn't that be something, if once a year you took your little black box down to the police station, stood in line for hours, and handed over your box so they could analyze it and tell you how many times you broke the law, whether it be running a light, not stopping at a stop sign, speeding, failing to use your turn signal, etc. Eh, at least LEOs would have some more free time

Default Black Boxes

Several years ago in Car and Driver a story was printed that said tat a certain car rental company installed a device in each of their cars that recorded the time and date a certain, predetermined speed wes exceeded. The customer first learned there was a problem when FINES appeared on their credit card! No judge, no jury. You are guilty because the black box said so; now pay up.
As for drug testing in the military, once a year might be a reduction in testing. 20 years ago I was a member of the Naval Air Reserve on active as a "TAR", or Training and Administration of Reserves. Before my time they were known as "station Keepers" because they were on station during the weed when the "weekend warriors" were away.
Every weekend the reservists came out for their drills, there was a random drug test. This was typically twice a month; half the reservists assigned the unit on one weekend, the other half, another weekend. 2 or three numbers were pulled from a hat. All those whose social security number ended in one of those drawn would be tested. Depending on one's luck, or lack of it, an active duty member could be tested twice a month.
The main thing that bothered me about the testing was a false positive test. There were rumors that certain foods would cause this, such as poppy seed muffins. As a member of the military, when it came to testing, hey, that's the way it is. Anyone who has ever worked on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, for example, knows this is no place for drug use. This is why alcohol is not legal aboard ship as well!

So, if there is a draft, you just smoke a joint before your physical and you wont get drafted?

If there's drug testing just go around and gather up all the legal stuff you need and eat a lot of it (like poppy seeds) then go take a test. How can they do anything to you if you fail it for opiates and you show them a bunch of empty bottles of poppy seeds?

Sorry....won't work like that.

You get sent to the front.

If you aren't killed, you are dishonorably discharged for PEE unbecoming a military ossifer.

Drink alllllllll you want....and smoke carcinogenic tobacco, though.

Talking me again

It turns out the belief that poppy seeds induces false positives is a myth. I should have mentioned that. At the time I was in the Navy, I did not know hence my peranoia and avoidance of poppy seeds.
As for avoiding the draft (if there were one) by consuming drugs that might actually work. According to "No one here gets out alive", the story of the Doors, by Danny Sugarman when Jim Morrison received his draft notification he consumed a variety of drugs before going in for his physical exam. Weither it was the drugs or Morrison's ranting things like they "would be the sorryest sob's on the planet" if they drafted him that kept him from being inducted is not said. He was, however, classified "not suitable for military service."
