So how well would hemp grow in Oregon? According to a 1998 research paper by an Oregon State University crop and soil scientist, hemp is unlikely to become a major commodity in the Pacific Northwest.

For all the precipitation that befalls Oregon, not enough of it rains down during hemp’s summer growing season, wrote OSU’s Daryl Ehrensing.

Before federal drug laws and the advent of synthetic materials like nylon and petroleum-based plastics doomed hemp, it flourished in such Midwestern states as Kentucky and Wisconsin.
Well.... you see folks Hemp is a good rotation crop. that is. you rotate it into fields where other crops were grown, like Corn. You do this because hemp unlike corn, does not need a lot of additional nutrients, most of those are derivatives of oil also. Hemp plants roots can go very deep, you do not need a lot of surface water for a hemp crop. My understanding is that Oregon has concentrated more on growing trees than they have on growing other crops, this doesn't mean other crops can grow there, it just means they haven't de-forested the place so they could plant large fields of corn.
And no. it was not before the federal drug laws, and it was not because these oil based products 'doomed hemp'. It is exactly the opposite that in 'fact' happened. The invention of the decortitator would have doomed the paper industry that used wood and polluted our land, and it would have doomed these oil based synthetic fibers. Hemp is better, lasts longer and does not pollute the environment.
I am appalled that any University would let such a stupid interpretation of the History of Hemp be associated with their schools name.

The same pattern has been playing out in Canada, where farmers have been legally growing hemp since 1998. Canada’s breadbasket provinces, Manitoba and Saskatchawan, have produced 81 percent of that country’s hemp crop. Westernmost British Columbia, with growing conditions more similar to Oregon, has produced 2 percent of Canadian hemp.
I would check and find out what the major crop in British Columbia is before I made this type of moronic statement. Don't they grow a rather large amount of some plant that is related to the hemp plant there. Hemp $600.00/ acre. Marijuana $4000/ pound? Hmmm...

“The old rule of thumb is that you can grow good hemp where you can grow good corn,” Ehrensing said. “Look around the Northwest. How much corn do you see growing? Not much. There’s a reason for that, and the same would be true for hemp.”

But Ehrensing allowed that as long as growers in Oregon are willing to test the marketplace, hemp could prove a successful niche crop — especially for those with land with access to irrigation water in the Willamette Valley and in the Columbia River Basin.
No, the old rule of thumb is, if you want good corn, you rotate it with crops like alfalfa and hemp to replenish the nutrients that the corn takes out of the soil. Look around, how many trees do you see growing. Hemp is grown all over the World, except in the US. It could be used to clean up toxic waste sites because the roots go very deep into the soil, his statements show a total lack of knowledge of the hemp plant. VV
