| POLICE: 300 officers launch raids on drug suspects www.peterboroughet.co.uk | 21 April 2004 http://www.peterboroughet.co.uk/getE...ImageID=165120 ONE of the biggest drugs busts ever mounted by Cambridgeshire police has led to 15 arrests. Fourteen people, who have not been identified, are being quizzed in police stations across the county. One has been released on bail. Today, many of the 300 officers involved in the raids, codenamed Operation Morpheus, continued combing houses, outbuildings and land, in a farming hamlet near Wisbech, executing a total of 36 search warrants. Class A and Class C drugs, believed to be cocaine and cannabis, which were found in six homes, are now being inspected by experts. Temporary Chief Superintendent David Hankins, of Peterborough police, said the seizures were good news in the war on drugs in the city. He said: "Where we can blunt the supply of any significant amount of drugs it will have a positive impact on Peterborough." Police have their suspicions about the source of drugs being found in rural areas of Cambridgeshire, but will not speculate on whether or not they have come from Peterborough, or further afield. Officers working on the crackdown yesterday were supported by the force helicopter, and were today expected to be reinforced by officers drafted in from Essex and Norfolk, as the search included scouring hedgerows and verges. Assistant Chief Constable John Feavyour, of Cambridgeshire police, said: "We expect to find a substantial amount of cannabis and cocaine. "Drugs can be hidden anywhere. The search will also be extended to find money and proceeds of crime." More arrests are expected, but police have refused to say how many suspects they have. Mr Feavyour said: "We are talking about a group of people in business together." Drama came to Redmoor Lane, near the sleepy village of Begdale, on the outskirts of Wisbech, yesterday. Police swarmed around one particular property. It stood out from its red brick neighbours because it was twice as big, painted in a bright, light-tan colour, with a loft extension, two outbuildings, and a greenhouse, and 30 officers carrying firearms burst inside. Transporters were then brought in to take away vehicles, including two bright yellow BMW sports cars, a £60,000 Range Rover, an Audi TT sports car, and a speedboat. Some other arrests were made at addresses in the Wisbech area. The busts came after a year of covert investigations. The 14 people under arrest were today confirmed to be 10 men and four women. The men's ages ranged from 22 to 59, and the women aged from 22 to 52. The man who was released on police bail was said to be 51 and has been ordered to return to a Cambridgeshire police station on May 14. [zombienote: We are all so much safer now.........]

| I can understand the worries linked with cocaine, but marijuana grows NATURALLY on the planet, deeming it illegal is obsurd and the people who enforce this law have been grosely misinformed and either need to be educated (get stoned) or do somthing more constructive with there lives. | |

| Now if somebody had robbed the local bank while all these officers where stomping around the cow pastures, it would have been a bit of poetic justice! ![]() |

| Nothing like devoting 300 ossifers to something to betray how overwhelmingly important marijuana suppression is. I thought that once Tommy Chong was jailed the world would have been rid of crime...... |

| I have a theory, garnered from years of listening to reports of police busts on the radio. Has anyone else ever noticed that whenever you hear of a mj bust the cops also always find some cociane too? I've had my fair share of mj suppliers, and none of them dealt coke. In Northern Michigan there was a team of law enforcement officers called UPSET (Upper Peninsula Subtance Enforcement Team) who would regularly announce their busts. Every time I heard of one of their busts on the radio without fail the perp would also have a small amount of coke on them. Coincidence? Maybe. Or maybe planting a little coke on an mj smoker will make the crime seem more serious, the bust look more legit, and the "criminal" will get a longer sentence. Maybe I'm wearing the tin foil hat. -HH |
