| TV talker says pot is healing timesunion.com | Monday, May 3, 2004 After he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999, TV talk show host Montel Williams tried a battery of prescription drugs to combat the extreme pain in his legs and feet. OxyContin. Vicodin. A morphine drip that left him "in the corner, drooling." Nothing worked. Then he tried pot. "I tell you that the only thing that seems to work for me and make me a contributing member of society is marijuana," Williams said from London during a recent telephone interview. Williams said he prefers eating marijuana, but in a pinch, a few tokes can bring his pain from a "level five down to a three." Williams has even started a company to package and market pot in countries where it's legal for sick people to use. And, he'll be in Albany Tuesday to lobby for legalization of medical marijuana. He said he is scheduled to meet with Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, and Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, R-Brunswick. The Democrat-led Assembly Health Committee has twice passed a bill to allow marijuana prescriptions primarily for terminally ill patients. It is widely endorsed by the medical community. Nine states have passed such laws, but Bruno and Republican Gov. George Pataki are opposed. [zombienote: Wow...really?] Williams, an ex-Marine and U.S. Naval Academy grad who says he voted Republican or independent all his life, isn't for legalizing marijuana -- or any other drug -- for general use. But for those who are ill, his opinion is clear. "A doctor told me I could take up to 30 pills of OxyContin a day, yet you're going to tell me it's not OK for me to take the equivalent of one gram of pot and eat it in a cookie in the comfort of my own home?" said Williams, 47. "Do you want a junkie or someone who's paying their taxes? I've been paying them real well for the past four years." [SNIP - Article changes to completely different topic]

| Dr DuPont? Geez Louise, do you think that he could be related to the robber baron family? It's pretty obvious that chap has been 'over-educated', egostical, and has no practical life experience with the efficacies of the beloved cannabis. That's a fairly broad assumption that everyone has health insurance, and no one retains enough wisdom to self determine the ingestion of something, and in what quantity. Let's hope the Karmic wheel doesn't befall MS, or cancer, or some other insidious dis-ease where the good doctor could have some practical life experience where he can scientifically, emperically, determine for himself how enjoyable some of the side-effects of conventional medicines are. May his 'God' forbid that he actually makes himself feel better while treating some of the symptomatic effects of some of the more henious medical conditions which merit the consumption of cannabis. It's too bad Montel has had to experience MS to appreciate some of the more pleasant side effects of his medication. The thought that only the 'sick' should enjoy the efficacy of cannabis is rediculous. Cannabis efficacy, the mild (alter)ation of consciousness, treats the mind/body/soul complex, not just the body. Does consciousness create form, or does the form create the consciousness? The piety of some humans, and the discernmants of right and wrong, good and bad are a joke. One only has to look at the state of being of the planet as a whole to realize that those humans 'in charge' not only have all the answers to life, but know what's best for everybody else... Any government or person in authority who feels they are endorsed by their 'God', know the 'right' course for everyone else is part of the problem, not the solution. CIVILIZATION HAS A WAYS TO GO BEFORE IT ACTUALLY IS. Let's try and not screw the planet up too bad in the 'mean' time... | |

| It sez Joe Bruno is opposed but is schelded to meet with Williams. Montel Williams would seem to be an intelligent man. Perhaps he can persuade Bruno to change his opinion on this. The fact that a meeting is being held means there is SOME reason for optimism. I'm Smoking Joe and I approved the sarcasim in the title. |

| what is amazing to me are all the celebrities who do not speak up. with all the marijuana "humor" and honorable mention in music/movies you would think some of these folks would speak more openly of it.(maybe real activism is not allowed by the record Co's,after all they just want to profit from it, not be a target) HMMMMMMMMMMM it takes someone who has little to lose and all the comfort in the world to gain NEEDING marijuana to live in peace to make a LOUD statement. (SORRY ABOUT THE RANT) ![]()

| I'm gonna paraphrase a comedian. His name was Bill Hicks. Take all your albums and cd's. and think about the music created on them. The people who created this music....Real F'ing high on drugs. Why does this "lapse" into your creative side scare people. Wait...I know that one...you'll realize how full of s**t the prohibitionists really are. And you'll vote them out of office. And start enjoying life, and god forbid, start having fun. We can't have that. You have henceforth and furthermoer'd been interzoned. Be proud. |
