| Denver Paper Says High Time for Pot Critic With Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Booming, Alt-Weekly Seeks Reviewer to Tell Good From Bad 10/5/09 | CBS News | Alex Sundby (CBS) An alternative weekly in Denver wants to fill what some applicants might call the newspaper's highest position. Westword, an alt-weekly serving Colorado's capital city since the 1970s, posted an ad calling for a freelance reviewer to provide first-person accounts of conditions inside the area's marijuana dispensaries. The reviewer would contribute to the paper's "Mile Highs and Lows" column to "provide an objective resource on the state's burgeoning medical marijuana scene." As The New York Times reported Monday, the new position arose out of a boom in the business of dispensing medical marijuana. Such an increase in the number of dispensaries came from a combination of the state's voters approving a medical marijuana law in 2000, state authorities interpreting the law broadly and the Obama administration's decision to no longer conduct federal raids on businesses operating with the state's approval. CBSNews.com Special Report: Marijuana Nation "It is the wild west of medical marijuana out here," Westword Editor Patricia Calhoun told the Times. "There were a couple of dozen dispensaries this spring, and now it's over 100. We just heard there's going to be a drive-through dispensary." The reviews aren't meant to rank the quality of the marijuana, but Calhoun told the Times that those details might be included later. The reviewer won't even be able to expense samples of a dispensary's product, for which the writer would have some medical need. The job is only open to residents who, according to the state, need access to medical marijuana. While the ad pokes fun at the prospect of creating the first such position in American journalism - job seekers are discouraged from writing their applications on rolling papers - Calhoun said the paper is serious about providing a service to residents who frequent the dispensaries. "We want to see what kind of place it is, how well they care for you and also how sketchy the place is," Calhoun told the Times. "Do they actually look at your medical marijuana card? Do they let you slip some cash under the counter and bypass the rules?" In other words, the job entails actual work. The ad even includes the phrase guaranteed to kill any buzz: "Compensation will be meager." Note: Can you say best job ever!?

| We'll see how it plays out, but when they're talking about commenting on the quality of the weed down the road, I don't think this is meant to be anything negative. But, with how thins go in this country, I would not be surprised if they just paid someone to write a bunch of garbage about these dispensaries in the newspaper to sway public opinion.

| I don't think it's stressing on the shops that are doing bad. It's just reviews of the dispensaries. Like restaurant reviews. It will help the community decide which shops are right for them.... ~Tim |

Why would any medical marijuana consumer want to write nothing but garbage to sway public opinion...that would be sorta like biting the hand that feeds you, don't you think?
