Theres nothing stopping Obama from chaging that directive any time he feels it would serve his best interest to do so. An actual change in the federal laws to recognize medical marijuana would be a start in offering these people REAL safety to use marijuana as medicine. Until then, they are merely safe until the President decides they aren't, which isn't a huge assurance to me. If he's serious about recongnizing mmj, have him lead the way in changing the law. I've heard enough promises from politicans in my day to know enough to be suspicious of anything that isn't backed up by law.
How much power does Obama have to actually change the law? (At least constitutionally...) For any real progress to be made on a federal level wouldn't Congress have to reschedule Marijuana and/or repeal or edit the Controlled Substances Act? I could be a bit off base I'm just curious what you think Obama could do to change the Federal law.

No, you're exactly right. He cannot change laws on his own. Thats why I suggested he "lead the way" rather than "change the law". However,he IS obviously very influential as to what actions Congress pursues (health care, anyone?). I fully understand he cannot change laws all by himself. However, a real effort to actually amend the Controlled Substances Act and repeal the federal ban on marijuana for medical use would be MUCH more olf a sign of good things to come than a mere directive which can be rescinded at any time and carries absolutely no promises of real protection, and actually explicitly states that the feds reserve the right to raid those in compliance with state laws any time they deem it necessary. Obama doesn't have the power to chantge the law, but he certainly has influence over what buills are pursued, considering his party controls Congress at the moment.

As a Canadian, I do tend to keep an eye on stuff like that. I understand we've been doing the MMJ thing for a while, but I get the feeling that we won't get much farther without the US giving our leadership the go-ahead. So...this is a step forward, if a little one.

This was in Slate today. A pretty level headed view about the directive on what it means and doesn't mean, they do put forth the idea that this may aid in getting more MMJ laws passed in states considering it now

Will Obama's new medical marijuana directive actually change anything? - By Christopher Beam - Slate Magazine
