| NightShift - You're right about being constantly labeled as a 'defender of all things Drug War'. I've read a large number of your posts over the last year or two and I'm not quite sure of your opinion on all the matters brought up (you typically state facts as opposed to your opinions, whereas Logos weaves fact and opinion together often and quite eloquently, I like his lengthy post above a LOT), but I am sure that you always introduce your expertise and knowledge where that expertise and knowledge would otherwise be lacking. We, as an activist community, must not forget that no cause is perfect, and when NiteShift introduces opposing evidence or points of view he is, intentionally or unintentionally, strengthening our argument by helping us make it more realistic. Marijuana prohibition (and in my opinion, all drug prohibition) is simply wrong, but that doesn't mean that every aspect of it is wrong. I'd rather not have a society filled with malnourished heroin junkies and tweakers (Crystal Meth addicts) with no teeth, for instance. The difference between me and the DEA is that I think prohibition laws and prison sentences are the worst possible way to accomplish that goal. Thanks NiteShift for posting your perspective, every cause needs a Devil's Advocate, and you're ours! ![]()

| heres how i picture the "profit".dont know how right or wrong it is,just my POV. wouldnt the officers involved have gotten paid for the 14 months or whatever even if they hadnt been investigating this case.im sure there are other things that they could have spent those resources on.so its kinda like they were just doing their normal jobs, but gettin a little extra $$ at the end, even if it isnt a large amount |

| To give Niteshift credit he has always seemed reasonable enough in cases where I've seen him post, such as explaining where he thinks some of the 80% of forfeitures come from. But, I do think that abuse has happened more often than people think. There's an old quote from Joseph McNamara, former San Jose and Kansas City police chief, that goes like this... Joseph McNamara, former San Jose and Kansas City police chief, said he remembers one year in when his department's budget had no money for equipment, so McNamara asked the city manager why. "He kind of waved his hand dismissively and said: "Well, you guys seized $4 million last year, I expect you to do better this year." http://www.libertocracy.com/Webessay...e_violates.htm Here's another article written by the same guy expressing deeper levels of concern about the police, and remember he was the chief of two different cities forces. http://www.nakedgov.com/mcnamara.htm Now to be honest I haven't seen a lot of news of seizures recently, if it's happening it's buried better in the news than it used to be. It's possible that it's not happening as much as it used to since the reforms Clinton made in the law, but Niteshift will just have to understand that we'll still be a bit suspicious I know there's good cops out there and I've got great respect for someone who will post here and try to be reasonable, but for now I think many are still expecting that what we know did happen still is happening to some extent, at least until we see proof or stats to the contrary. Certainly not in all cases, but maybe in some with idiot bosses like McNamara had.
