Post CAL: Testimony from California Assembly committee hearing on legalization of cannabis

CAL: Testimony from California Assembly
Committee hearing on legalization of cannabis.

Russ Belville| NORML | 10/27/09 |

Yesterday’s testimony by supporters and foes of Assembly Bill 390, an act to tax and regulate marijuana in California, is now posted on the web at the following URLs:

Part I: The California Channel: Video on Demand

Part II: The California Channel: Video on Demand

Part III: The California Channel: Video on Demand

Retired Orange County Superior Court Judge James P. Gray’s testimony was one of the last to be heard, and to use a World Series metaphor, we couldn’t have asked for a better “clean up” hitter:

Default Interesting Stuff

I watched all 3 videos, it took about 3-4 hours but it was interesting...The only people who seemed to be against this were the 2 representatives of the police unions....big surprise. These 2 spewed complete bullsh*t, like:

The marijuana of today is much stronger, up to 30% THC (bullshit)...to which a superior court judge later replied "The increased potency is directly a result of prohibition, if you're going to get the same punishment for bootlegging a barrel of beer as you will for bootlegging a barrel of bourbon, which are you going to bootleg? Obviously the one which is going to make you more money".

The other cop union rep stated that the Netherlands saw an increase of teens being admitted to drug treatment programs between 1991 and 1993. Funny how they'll pick and choose their stats, considering the current dutch policy was implemented in the 1970's, and that over all the rates have declined, and are currently half of North America's use.

Then there was talk about marijuana being dangerous because of the pesticides used...again due to a lack of regulation in a black market. Then there was talk about the violence that the marijuana trade incites...again due to the black market......In short, every argument these bozo's made was completely the result of the current laws...it was actually pretty funny to watch.

Anyways.....enough with my rant. To sum it up, there were far more arguments in favour of legalization than against. The arguments against were weak....all in all these hearings were very refreshing to watch....It appears as though common sense is finally starting to prevail.
