The case of the vanishing pot plants

RCMP in Alberta are trying to figure out how the stash found at a marijuana grow operation disappeared when police guards left the scene.

The grow operation was revealed to police Thursday when a fire broke out at an abandoned farm near Holden, about 100 kilometres south of Edmonton. Volunteer firefighters found the marijuana in a farm building and alerted the RCMP.

Police arrived at 11 p.m. Thursday and taped off the building before returning to the detachment to get a search warrant. When they went back at 11 a.m. Friday, the marijuana plants were gone.

"An inquiry is being conducted into what was done and what was not," said RCMP Corporal Peter Nobles.

Holden Mayor Ivan Hrabec, who was one of the volunteer firefighters who made the pot discovery, suggested police should have stayed on guard.

Hrabec said firefighters went back to the scene Friday morning when hay bales began smouldering. He said they noticed someone had driven through the police tape.

"In retrospect, some people might say it would have been a good idea for the RCMP to have stayed put until a larger contingent could come out and remove the plants," Hrabec said.

I think it was sweet of the RCMP to give them 12 hours to get their plants out before they came back for them. The thing is, it might not have been the growers that came back to get their plants, it could have been anyone! Volunteer firefighters talk and word would have gotten around a small community like this and anyone could have shown up to steal the plants in a 12 hour time period. Way to go RCMP!

Well, I give the RCMP because maybe they were really saying "crap, another MJ bust, WHO CARES!?"... Maybe they didn't really care about the MJ 'cause they knew that it could be nothing serious... or maybe it was serious and heavy dealer got away!?? (anyways, its just MJ, so really, who cares? )

Very good Rick! My uncle was an OPP, Ontario Provincial Police, and he just hated the RCMP and always went on about how stupid and ignorant they were. He just hated having to work with them and I've heard that sentiment from plenty of other officers I know. The more I read about the RCMP, the more my uncle's opinions ring true. I'm just glad they didn't get their hands on the weed and didn't get to destroy it.

That is actually quite funny.
Obviously the would realize that someone would come and take the plants if they left the building 'unprotected'. Lets hope it was the growers that came and took them, if not someone scored big!

Maybe some of the 'volunteer' firefighters decided to go back for a little payment for putting the fire out.
You know it's a small town when the mayor is also a fireman. I live in a small town too with a volunteer fire department and we've never had a mayor do double duty. (At least not in the last 20 years.)
