Millions of British teenagers have had sex, been drunk and smoked cannabis by the time they are 15

A survey by the World Health Organization reveals that one in three 15 year olds has had sex.

Two out of three have been drunk and one in three has tried cannabis. Most drink alcohol every week while one in five regularly smokes cannabis.

The figures, which are outlined in a new report, are among the highest in Europe and North America.

The survey, which was coordinated by researchers at the University of Edinburgh, also reveals that many young Britons are failing to use contraception when they have sex.

Of those 15-year-olds who have had sex, one in three said they did not use a condom when they last had intercourse. One in five said they hadn't used any contraception at all.

The report shows that children as young as 11 regularly drink alcohol. It found that 13% of 11-year-old boys and 8% of 11-year-old girls drink alcohol every week.

Some 10% of boys and 6% of girls have been drunk at least twice by the age of 11. By the time they reach 15, more than half of teenagers have been drunk.

Rates of smoking are relatively high. Around 2% of youngsters smoke at least once a week by the age of 11. That increases to over 10% of 13-year-olds and over 25% of 15-year-olds. Girls are much more likely to smoke than boys.

The WHO questioned 162,000 children in 35 countries in Europe and North America as part of its health behaviour in school-aged children (HBSC) project.

It confirmed that Britain has some of the highest rates of child obesity in the World.

But it also revealed that many youngsters are very conscious about how they look and how much they weigh.

Some 16% of girls and 10% of boys in Wales have gone on a diet by the time they are 11. The figures for England and Scotland are only slightly lower.

[Suetaznote: Yay, Canada made it on a list! I know I was smoking cannabis by the time I was 15. Not on a regular basis, but I started at the age of 11. Maybe having so many young cannabis users is why Canada has a reputation for being friendly and easy going. ]

The report suggests young Britons are less likely to eat healthily than teenagers in many other countries.

Less than a third of teenagers eat fruit or vegetables every day.

Children in Scotland are more likely to eat sweets and consume fizzy drinks every day compared to children living in almost every other country surveyed.

The report also shows that British teenagers spend hours in front of televisions and computers each week.

For instance, more than a quarter spend over four hours watching television each day during the week. That rises to close to half at weekends.

But researchers insisted that the report did have some positive findings.

"It is not all bad news," said Dr Candace Currie, one of the researchers.

"Rates of smoking have fallen dramatically especially among boys and physical activity rates are comparatively high. There is some really good work going on."

well I can see how Greenland could have the most Cannabis users, it is cold as **** up there and no one wants to leave their houses and go out in the cold weather, so what the hell else are you going to do? You are going to sit inside watching tv, communicating with others through the use of computers, and drinking and smoking MJ in order to pass the time on those long cold nights. It makes sense.

I don't think the cold is a major reason why kids in greenland smoke/drink/f*ck at a young age... Just imagine how boring it must be to live there! It can kinda be compared to northern canada; and what do many native canadians (inuits, or eskimos but thats politically incorrect in my mind) do?? Gamble, get wasted, smoke (weed and tobe), and huff gasoline! The living conditions are similar to those of greenland. Relatively small villages, usually spaced far appart from each other. How else are these kids supposed to cope with boredom? i don't blame em'...

I wouldn't go and actually believe all of these polls that they have gotten, though im sure the amount that are smoking and drinking are higher (Pun intended or not, decide for yourself, hehe) than the US. I know when i was 15 i would greatly exhagerate any activity i did, whether it was a "bad" activity or a "good" one. I bet about a quarter or more of those kids who said they had gotten drunk before the age of 11 didn't. I once saw my little brother take two sips of beer at age of 13 and claim to be wasted.

Did anyone see that beavis and butthead when they buy that Non-alchoholic beer and think they got wasted, its the same principal. Now, about the sex, im willing to bet its about the same percentage that is just going a little bit overboard to sound cool maybe. I seriously doubt that all these little kids are going around having sex, because I'm willing to bet that a good amount of them can't have sex. Just because some of the "cool" kids are going around getting loose, the rest of the student body is going to claim that they are also going around and having orgies, not a reliable resource to me.

The percentages seem awfully low and not too big of deal in my eyes, i dont think any of the percentages go near 20%. I think that the percentage of trailer trash or "ghetto boos" having sex and drinking up some of their parents liquor is around the same percentage, the only diffrence is that here, we've got Ricky Lake and Jerry Springer to show these ingrates to the nation.

I've seen some of those "My 13 year old is a slut." shows, and though halarious, i find most of what they say unbelievable, why, because there can't be that many sick individuals that would actually do the things the kid says she is getting done to her because she is a short 300 pound clown (or thats what she looks like to me). I wouldn't put alot fo faith in these polls or in the truth telling of horny 15 year olds.

Yeah, this article sounds like a bunch of anti-drug/abstinence propaganda to me. What I'd like to know before believing any of this is, who was polled? How was the survey conducted? I'm willing to bet a lot of 11 year old respondants lied about having sex and getting drunk- I know I would if I were that age, just for laughs.

This is obviously propoganda because they say things like "many youngsters are concerned with their weight" and then proceed to tell you only 10% of boys in wales have gone on a diet by age 11?

That makes for a staggering 1/10?!?! Thats a very small minority!

This article says one thing, and provides facts that show just the opposite.

As far as I remember, and I think its still true. Many teens get high and either watch the tube or go online. Duh!
I still fail to see the ciggerette mentioned in the survey.
Well it was not my survey, and they did ask kids.
Which "Stewscum" pointed out tend to exagerate .
