Talking The Road To Ottawa

Just before we hit the highway, as the folks were meeting and greeting, they
were all getting out their first official hit for the trip. There was something of
everything to smoke it seemed. I saw more big bags of beautiful bud than I
had ever seen in my life and I hope to see that sight again before too long.
Everyone with a bag full of nuggets and they’re just getting ready to go to
town. As the bus hits the highway the Js are sparked up in celebration,
passed and the community has bonded.

Attendance was discussed but nobody had a clue as to how many would be
there, no one could come up with a number much bigger than the total of the
few 40passenger limos we knew were going. Seemed to be the same number
for all on board though, “1, just me, my time to stand up!” The numbers
were not important ‘cause we had a busload of individuals who wanted to
show their support for a common cause. Our time had come to speak-out, a
little karma had brought us together, I could tell by the smell.

We had so much fun, we all had something in common and the subject turned
to “all about weed”. Things you heard, things you knew about the plant,
things you smoked and places you smoked it, the list goes on and on...

We talked about “grow cubes” and I thought I would share this with you, we
had some laughs with it. Take an ice cube tray and fill it with potting soil,
add 5 or 6 ditch weed seeds in the middle of each cube. Add a little water to
get mud, freeze it and you have instant grow cubes. Everyone’s eyes would
get bigger and brighter when they were told, laughs and chuckles all around,
ideas of what you could do with it. Of course they would have never
survived the bus ride but we had fun with the idea of where to toss them in
the morning or sling shot them and let them go to seed. Not the whole
country, just a few key locations. The talk turned to comming back for the
smell of it all in late September. Perhaps we were just high at the time too.

There are some creative minds at work within this community
in a variety of ways, funny people and good smoke too eh?

Tell us more as you remember it!

The guy in the Cat-in-the-hat hat was Chris Lawson, but sorry, I didn't get the title of his poem.
The pothead that stole the show was David Malmo-Levine.
What time did the buses leave Qwiz? I assume they were from TO? How long did it take to get to Ottawa? They were cool looking buses, I wish I'd gotten a picture of them. I was in the perfect spot to take one and didn't do it. Live and learn, I'll do better next year.
I wouldn't mind hearing more of your point of view of the events Qwiz!
Anyone else here going to a Canabian Day event- besides Buzz of course, I know Buzz will be there.

Cool Highway to Ottawa

Thanks SueTaz & all, that's very kind.

We had a few pit stops along the way, chance to get out, stretch and hit
the johns. Standing outside the bus, we were joking about whether to go or
not, you know, whether to break the seal or not. If ya go here, will you need
to go again soon or are you in a position to not go and be ok to hold it? I
pondered that question but thought I would make room for a coffee. We
board the bus, heads are counted and we’re off. Each of us content, we
settle back for the next stretch of road and the next joint.

Driving north into the early morning light, I could see the landscape changing.
I love the North, any night or day, anywhere in Canada. Through the rock
cuts and lakes we make our way, it’s lush, green, and full of life. There
weren’t many homes lining the road and all I could see for what seemed like
miles, were great grow spots. A passenger asked me what I was thinking,
looking out the window? "I imagine I’m out there, with a plant, or two and
my shovel, looking at all the beautiful places I could hide it." "Go by boat or
canoe, places where man has yet to set foot." "I could see a plant behind
every evergreen…" Then, there it was, the dream is over! We
heard, “deer!” Pest control nightmare... We saw a few more deer, some by
moonlight and some from the sunrise. A beautiful sight to be sure when
they’re not eating your weed.

Now on the road for some time I’m thinking we're still a ways away from the
next scheduled stop. I’m regretting my decision to gamble and break the
seal. I see one of the passengers from the back, move his way up musical
chairs style and come up and sit beside me. A brief introduction and a
handshake and the topic quickly turns to “when’s our next stop?” “Right
here, right now, I gotta go bad!!!" He says. He tells the driver who radios
the other bus that he’s stopping, hits the binders and stops on the shoulder
of the road. A whole bunch pile out in disbelief. Relief!!! I would never
have made it, I suspect many were in the same boat, now I know why it got
quiet on the bus. It was like an instant second wind for many and helped to
wind up the party atmosphere. We were back on the road… heading for 4:20!

Me too! I noticed it was very swampy once you got to the Kingston area and then all the way north. Lots of white birch up there too.

I saw 2 deer on the way home that night! I forgot until I read your post. It was eerie, the way I saw them. They were at the side of the road and the headlights didn't catch them directly, just enough to make them look like ghosts. I love deer, I'd grow enough to share with the deer, deer should be happy too.

I was glad we drove up for that reason!

Wink Are we there yet?

We hear a plea it’s getting a little cold in the back of the bus. “Put the
windows up please?” The word is passed person to person, windows up,
we’re getting close to 4:20. The windows go up and there's a flurry of
activity, everyone reaching for their stash or perhaps that first ceremonial
offering, rolled the previous day. No countdown or fanfare but pretty much
in unison, the passengers spark up, a buzz came over the crowd. I’ve seen a
purple haze or two in my day but nothing like that.

Yes, it was my first official hot box. There were no windows open and
therefore the cloud just hung in the air, wafting. I enjoyed my rocket and
finished it. I take a good look around and admired the aroma of the bus. The
bus seemed like a giant bong, with the smoke slowly being sucked out of the
driver’s only open widow.

The bus in front of us seemed to pull away, put more distance between us.
We were slowing down a little and occasionally we would drift slightly in the
lane only to kiss the rumble strip that lined the shoulder. I could only think of
the Senate Committee’s findings on the effects of cannabis and driving. No
doubt the passengers were aware of the report and we knew what caused
the slowdown and added a slight weave to the now more cautious trip. We
could only chuckle sheepishly for we knew what we had done. We wouldn’t
be keeping up with the first bus for now but after a little time, when the
smoke cleared, we caught up to them and were back in the familiar spot
behind them. I may have been on a bus but I was flying.

Question Time warp.

The Peace Tower rings in one o’clock, it’s official, we’ve made it, time to
spark up on the lawn of Parliament Hill. I sit down with my friend, he’s not
much of a smoker but he’s here to support the cause for his own reasons. I
had previously rolled this particular J with a zigzag orange paper, which is
larger than my usual zigzag whites. Yea, I know, a throwback from the past,
tell-me-about-it.

There’s a little delay in the starting of the Official Proceedings, which is
understandable for us potheads. I’m asked when it will start. I can only
think in terms of a Jamaican time frame for today. “Soon come mon…” I say
as I raise my J in celebration.

A University Student or Research Assistant takes advantage of the few
moments of quiet time to perform a little research. She’s about five eight,
thin, her shoulder length sandy blond hair is pulled back and up and she had
some kind of credentials hanging around her neck. I didn’t get a look at
them. She wore a brown dress shirt and dark brown knee length skirt. She
had a handheld recording device with a microphone and attempted to record
the coughs of pot smokers. She walks through the people patch, looking for
someone to take a large draw and then she would scurry over in an attempt
to register the potential hack. It became a game to pass the time. She
stayed for the initial flurry but when the first joints turned to roaches, she
realized we had been playing keep-away all along. The group of strangers had
a good chuckle when she left. Granted, I’m not afraid of research or the
truth. But here and now, are you kidding me?

Honestly, does she have any idea how she looked and acted? After a quick
study I remarked to a few from my generation, that we had all seen her
before but it was in black & white. I asked them if they saw what she looked
like and what she was wearing and they said “yes, a brown shirt!”

She was trying to record people coughing?! What good was that going to do her? Did she bother to ask anyone if they smoked cigarettes that might cause the coughing? Or was she going to assume that they were coughing due to marijuana smoking alone? What a twit. I didn't see her, thank god.

Do you have any recall Qwiz of how long the drive from TO to Ottawa took?

Cool Time

I tell you this chick doing research was like something out of an old WWII
documentary.

Once I made it on the bus and we departed, I was no longer concerned with
the aspect of time. I say time was of no interest but it seems my photos
reveal the story.

The Peace Tower was the only clock I wanted to see, so I was content to
just sit back and enjoy the company of those around me. Some were
focused on time and the speed or lack there of, which we traveled at. They
feared we were going to take a long time to get there but really, we had a
1pm date and I had no worries, the driver would get us there in plenty of
time. I was glad that we were taking our sweet time ‘cause I wanted to
arrive in Ottawa as the sun warmed up the city. I have no idea how long the
trip was, nor did I care. As the clock on the Peace Tower was still out of
sight I was content to let time stand still for the moment and party on.

My pictures did tell me a lot about time and I thought I would share them
with you.

Arrival at the Hill just after 9:am

National War Memorial just before noon.

A great place to smoke a J in the shade of the
National War Memorial looking at the Hill.

4:20 @ Parliament Hill.

I rather enjoyed the company on the trip and the next time I would go by bus
too. The drive by car seemed an attractive option at first but there is a lot
to be said for the camaraderie among strangers with a common cause. I
would go by bus again next year and would be disappointed if I missed out on
that part of the adventure. I hope to see all my new friends again next year
or at least make another 39 new friends.
