Medicinal marijuana demonstration spurred out-of-towners to write me
By RAY HACKETT | norwichbulletin.com | Sunday, June 13, 2004

With the political campaigns taking a hiatus last week in respect to President Ronald Reagan's funeral, it seemed like a good time to check on the mail. And three articles appearing in this paper over the last week produced an unusually high amount of feedback.

The story last week about supporters of the medicinal use of marijuana protesting outside U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, R-2nd District, office in Norwich drew the majority of the correspondence I received. And almost all of it came from folks well beyond our readership area -- Florida, California, North Carolina, Colorado, etc.

Apparently the story was picked up by various Internet web pages, and those active in the movement wrote to express their opinions.

Simmons scored points with the dozen protesters outside his office when he went out to personally talk with them about the issue. He expressed concern that law enforcement officials were not in favor of the use of medicinal marijuana but encouraged the protesters to send him information on the subject.

That point, however, did little to endear him with those who wrote.

"When Rep. Simmons asks for more compelling evidence about medical marijuana, he'd better be careful. God could give him the kind of answer he's least expecting to get," wrote Patricia Schwarz of Pasadena, Calif.

Hey...I wonder if the correspondence he mentioned from NC was mine? Cool!
