| Ky. man walking to join ‘free state' injured, robbed The Associated Press | Saturday June 19, 2004 CONCORD, N.H. -- A 20-year-old man who left his home and job last month to walk 1,000 miles from Corbin, Ky. to the "free state" of New Hampshire has ended his journey after being injured and robbed at a West Virginia rest stop. Randall Wolfe, a volunteer recruiter for the Free State Project, left Kentucky on May 23 but robbed at a rest stop in West Virginia, according to a spokesman for the group that hopes to attract thousands to New Hampshire to create a society with fewer laws and smaller government. "He injured his foot from walking and when he tried to go to sleep in a rest area he got robbed in the night," said James Maynard. It was not immediately clear Friday which rest stop. Wolfe is now back home in Kentucky recuperating but plans to try again at a later date. "He's going to be coming up with a more traditional way to travel," Maynard said. Wolfe left home in late May with $300, a new pair of Nikes and a few changes of clothes, after taking a month's leave from his job as a Taco Bell manager trainee. Maynard said all Wolfe's possessions, including a cellular phone, were stolen. Before leaving home, Wolfe said he was dedicating his life to the decriminalizing of marijuana, which he said he began smoking at the age of 10. He has been arrested twice for possession. "If it takes the rest of my life, it takes the rest of my life," he said. He had planned to arrive in time to make the "Porcupine Festival" in Lancaster, N.H., June 21-27, which organizers expect to be the largest Free State gathering yet. Among its goals, the Free State Project, which was started by a Yale graduate student, aims to eliminate "victimless crimes" such as prostitution and personal drug use. Other Free Staters advocate home schooling, lowering property taxes and protecting Second Amendment rights. Maynard emphasized the diversity of Free Staters' goals. "That's one of the strengths of our project is that we're people who have different priorities and that we've all gathered together in a common vision where government stays out of people's private lives and their wallets as much as possible," he said.

| Its important that everyone that agrees with these views give this organization some funding. Libertarians do have a place in our society, and they CAN make an impact.

| Fate has not been kind to Randall Wolfe By Beverley Wang | Associated Press Writer | Boston.com LANCASTER, N.H. -- June 27, 2004--Wolfe, the 20-year-old Corbin, Ky., man who planned to walk 1,000 miles to join the Free State Project's 'Porcupine Freedom Festival,' injured his foot and then was robbed at a campsite 350 miles into his journey. So he took his car. Friday night, Wolfe totaled his purple Neon when he hit a moose as he made his way through Lancaster, the site of the festival. "It was so tall that we couldn't see it until it was an inch away," Wolfe said. "My windshield is now touching my steering wheel." Bits of moose hair stuck out of Wolfe's smashed windshield. The spray-painted hood was crumpled. So was the vehicle's roof, which looks like it was smashed by a falling tree. "God hates me," said Wolfe, pausing to take a drag from a cigarette. "I've been on my own since I've been 17 and every last minute of it's been hell." Wolfe now is homeless. He forgot his tent in Kentucky and planned to stay in his car, but that is impossible now. He said he can't go back to Kentucky for legal reasons. He also lost his job as a Taco Bell manager-trainee when his bosses read about his Free State plans in an Associated Press report, which said Wolfe wants to decriminalize marijuana. "I got some change and that's all I got," he said. Wolfe said the vehicle is insured under his grandmother's name and he hasn't been able to get in touch with her. He has no money and can't afford to buy more time credits for his cellular phone. "First I put a hole in my foot, then I put a hole in my car," he said. Wolfe left Kentucky May 23, intending to arrive in New Hampshire in time for the Porcupine Festival. He hurt his foot in West Virginia in early June. In excruciating pain, he said he walked and crawled along the side of the freeway until he reached a rest stop. "I passed out on a bench with my stuff lying next to me. I woke up and my stuff was gone," he said. A friend came and drove him home, he said. All this trouble has Wolfe wondering if the Free State Project is worth it, but he still intends to move to New Hampshire eventually. "No matter what, I will be eventually living in this state, but right now, it's not meant to be," Wolfe said. He brightened briefly as he recalled arriving in New Hampshire, which may become home to thousands of libertarians in the Free State Project within the next few years. "I definitely felt a lot freer as soon as I crossed that border."
