| Sentence deferred on cannabis dealer 09 August 2004 | Cambridge News Bellatrix; I posted this story because I was curious about what effect, if any, the reclassification of cannabis in the UK had on this sentence and trial. If anyone out there knows about the law in the UK, please comment and give us your opinion. Thanks! A DRUG dealer caught in possession of cannabis with a street value of £330 had his sentence deferred for six months. Anthony Kalsey escaped a prison sentence when he appeared at Cambridge Crown Court. He had previously pleaded guilty to possessing 92.9 grams of cannabis with intent to supply. The court heard Kalsey, of Barnwell Road, Cambridge, had been stopped in his Vauxhall car by police on February 20. The officers smelled cannabis and Kalsey handed over a bag of the drug. When police searched the 38-year-old's home, they found a further 29 bags of herbal cannabis, a set of weighing scales and a handwritten debt list. The court was told Kalsey had a string of convictions for drug-related offences. Andrew Vout, mitigating, said Kalsey had spent part of his childhood in care and was now addressing his drug addiction. He said Kalsey was studying part-time at Cambridge Regional College and had a part-time delivery job. Judge Jonathan Haworth said the offence merited a nine-month prison sentence but noted Kalsey's progress with a drug treatment and testing order, and deferred sentence for six months. |
