Default AU: Another elderly couple on pot charges

Elderly couple on drug charges

By Tim Clarke | The Daily Telegraph (AU) | August 12, 2004

A SECOND elderly Perth couple is facing serious drug charges, after police raided their home and confiscated a large quantity of cannabis and an elaborate hydroponic system.

A 78-year-old man and his 68-year-old wife are expected to be charged today, with police alleging they knew about the operation at their home.

Detectives have said they also wish to speak to the couple's 32-year-old son, who is thought to be in the eastern states.

Police spent most of yesterday searching the couple's home, before removing 10 plants, about 80 grams of cannabis, and the equipment which had allegedly been used to cultivate the drug outdoors.

A WA Police spokesman said the plants were well established, indicating they had been there for some time.

"They are likely to be issued with a summons today, and then we will see them in court," the police spokesman said.

The latest raid comes after a couple from the Perth suburb of Carlisle became Australia's oldest drug traffickers when they were convicted after 19kg of cannabis was found stashed in their ceiling.

David Davies, 81, and his wife Florence, 77, are facing the prospect of having their home and assets confiscated under WA's proceeds of crime legislation after being convicted earlier this year.

The couple was sentenced to 16 months in jail, suspended for two years, after being convicted by a jury on two counts each of possessing cannabis worth up to $260,000 with intent to supply.

The Davies denied knowing about the drugs in the roof, but Mrs Davies admitted to using some of the 300 grams of cannabis found in an ice-cream container under their bed.

The prosecution told the jury trial that money was paid to them by their son Tyssul Davies in return for storing the commercially packaged drugs.

Tyssul Davies, 52, served time in prison after pleading guilty in October 2002 to the same drug charges his parents faced.

The Davies are appealing against their convictions.
