| Cannabis may block growth of brain cancer By James Hamilton | Sunday Herald | August 15, 2004 Cannabis chemicals may provide a new way of treating deadly brain cancer. Scientists have shown that cannabinoids – the chemicals responsible for the drug’s “high” – deter the growth of blood vessels which feed the tumour. They appear to prevent genes making a protein called VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) that stimulates the sprouting of blood vessels. Cutting off tumours’ blood supply is one of the latest anti-cancer strategies being explored by scientists. In studies cannabinoids significantly reduced the activity of VEGF in laboratory mice. They also lowered VEGF levels in tumour tissue samples taken from two patients with glioblastoma multiforme, the most lethal brain tumour type. About 4400 new cases of brain tumour are diagnosed in the UK each year. A small percentage of these are grade four gliomas, the most aggressive and dangerous brain tumours. Only about 6% of people diagnosed with these high- grade cancers live for more than three years. The disease is normally treated with surgery, followed by radiotherapy and possibly chemotherapy. But the main tumour often evades complete destruction and grows again to kill the patient. Cannabinoids had previously been shown to inhibit the growth of blood vessels in mice. But the mechanism involved remained a mystery and it was not known if the same effect occurred in humans. In the new Spanish-led study, cannabinoids were injected into mice with gliomas. DNA analysis was then carried out on 267 genes associated with the growth of tumour blood vessels. It showed that the cannabis compounds reduced the activity of several genes involved in VEGF production. Professor Manuel Guzman, from Complutense University in Madrid, said: “In both patients, VEGF levels in tumour extracts were lower after cannabinoid inoculation.” [Suetaznote: Excellent news! Further proof that marijuana doesn't cause cancer, it helps get rid of it!]

| I wonder how many people know that cannabinoids and cannabis mean marijuana? I mean, the lay people, the non-consuming public. I wish we could poll the country on it Great article too, rack another "proof point" up on the "truth" of cannabis.

| Why is such a headline NOT splashed across the Supermarket tabloids, along with "Saddam's Favorite hummus recipes" and "Martians actually control Russia" stories? It's so sensational. The answer is...becasue it is true. Cannabis is a massive threat to the profits of the pharmaceutical industry (forget about the oil industry for a moment) What happens if cannabis DOES, in its raw and natural form, help reduce or eliminate cancer cells? Should somebody go to jail for hiding such important knowledge? I sure as hell think so. That would be murder. People who support cannabis prohibition - like politicians and cops, and ignorant rightwing superchristians (but then, I repeat myself) - are all guilty of aiding and abetting the suffering and painful deaths of countless human beings. Sure am glad I am on the side of humanity...not insanity.

| There are people out there that believe smoking marijuana causes cancer. I'd like to know how anyone can seriously believe that when there is proof that marijuana (THC) can help reduce the size of tumors. I love this article. All the research and studies done on marijauna have not only shown that marijuana is harmless, it has shown that it has many medical benefits. The more research that is done, the more good news we read about it. Keep it coming! I love this stuff! ![]() Quote:

![]() I've said it before and I'll say it again: Until some of us realize that just being a Republican does not, in fact, make a person the foe of all anti-mj prohibitionists, there will be no change with the drug laws. Just as one party is not solely to blame for prohibition, one party will not be enough to end it.

It is the Republican Party that Offically Started and Offically maintains reefer madness. Anslinger, Nixon, Reagan, Bush - Clinton did the job so well, but it wasn't good enough for the Republicans (they sure hate oral sex, poor simps), and now Bush II What part of "Republican-sponsored" is so difficult to understand? I know it hurts and I don't say it to be mean, but these are the facts and they are irrefutable. A vote for the GOP is a vote to continue Reefer Madness - it's that simple. Cheers. And this thread is now leaning to the right so I will likely have a warning soon. I'll make this my last post so others can have the last word and feel happy. | |
