Default *Safety First: A Reality-Based Approach to Teens, Drugs, and Drug Education

Safety First | Click here for the book

Take Action! Support Comprehensive Drug Education in Your Child's School

Bring the Safety First message to your local PTA!

If you are a parent of a child in elementary, middle or high school-public or private- there's a better than 50-50 chance she's been bombarded with abstinence-only "drug education" through DARE or one of the other similar programs generously funded by the federal government. We now know that this approach leaves both teenagers and their parents ill-equipped to deal with the drug issue. That is why the Drug Policy Alliance created its Safety First project which is dedicated to providing parents of adolescents with honest, science-based information about drugs. We need your help in reaching out to other parents and the beginning of the new school year is a good time to start.

You will not be alone! More than 100,000 copies of the Safety First booklet have already been distributed in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive:

* We are an allied agency of the California State PTA which has mailed copies of the Safety First booklet to all its unit presidents and program officers and distributed our materials at local and statewide conferences.

* We recently attended the National PTA Convention where Safety First Director Marsha Rosenbaum, Ph.D. gave a well-attended workshop entitled "Getting Real About Teens, Drugs, and Drug Education" and where we distributed Safety First materials to hundreds of parent delegates from our booth in the Exhibition Hall.

* In response to a survey questionnaire we send people who have ordered the Safety First booklet, we've received comments like this one:

Quote:
"To be honest, I had not read the publication. With this survey in front of me, I decided to take a few moments to read it. Now my feedback: I want the Superintendent's Cabinet to read it. I want the Safety Committee to read it. I want more copies. I have a teenage son and daughter in school. I know they would value this honest information."
Let Us Know How It Goes

Please take a moment to fill out a brief survey about how you used the Safety First materials and what kind of response you got from other parents. We are planning to update our materials soon, and your feedback will really make a difference.

I just read that whole book in like a 30 minutes... I must say, for something so brief, it's impact was far greater than I anticipated. It is refreshing to see someone arguing both sides of the fence. Ultimately the whole book points to one thing: USE YOUR HEAD because drugs use is neither good or bad, but without any regard for saefty, just like any risky behavior it can become dangerous. I also love how they point out the obvious hypocrasy in America- If you do drugs you're a junkie! Now watch the TV, billboards and Hollywood as we bombard you with DRUGS that make you drunk, hyper, erect, happy, numb to pain, and sleepy.

I think Chris Rock said it best... They don't want you using your drugs, they want you on their drugs.

Parents have to take the initiative in this program -- Not the Cops and Not the School

THE Most important part of this program is the Parents. And taking that responsibility -- continuing to learn new skills even after your child is past childhood. Many parents believe their job is done and the School is responsible for their kids education, but that is far from the truth.

Learning to be a Parent -- no matter what kind of student you may have been in school -- is a never ending study and a never ending responsibility from the moment you choose to become a Mom or Dad.

Here is an overview of some of the site on just this point:

Begin by Listening

The first step is to “get real” about drug use among young people by listening to what they tell us about their lives. Taking the time to understand their perspective will guide us toward intelligent, thoughtful action.

Put Safety First

Teenagers need to trust that the important adults in their lives will provide help, if they need it. Our greatest challenge is to listen and help without excessive admonishment – which will certainly drive them away.

Just Say Know

As parents and role models for youth, talking with teens about drugs is an important responsibility. Teens are curious about drugs and crave credible and accurate information. To become a resource for your teens, educate yourself.

Familiarize yourself with teenage culture. Take the time to learn what interests your teens. Spend time with them listening to music, watching TV and going to movies they want to see.

Learn about the array of drugs available to young people. Study the physiological and sociological effects.
