'Cannabis surprise' eggs in hot demand, court told

A Kinder Surprise toy egg may retail for a couple of dollars, but when adapted for an illicit purpose, the plastic novelties can sell for up to $1000, the High Court at Palmerston North was told yesterday.

Detective Sergeant Sean Hansen, a former undercover drug officer and current organised crime unit detective, said the Kinder Surprise eggs were popular with drug manufacturers, who used them to store and sell cannabis or cannabis oil.

A "cannabis surprise" egg usually ranged in price from $500 to $600, but could fetch a price as high as $1000, he said.

Mr Hansen was giving evidence in the trial of Jason Andre Hikaka, who faces drug-related charges including, producing cannabis oil, possession of oil for supply, and possession of cannabis plant for sale.

Hikaka, 34, also faces charges of possession of methamphetamine for supply, and possession of precursor substances - ingredients used to manufacture methamphetamine.

He is denying all the charges.

The court was told a police raid on Hikaka's Palmerston North home last August recovered a number of items commonly associated with the production of cannabis oil.

These items included more than 1.5kg of cannabis leaf, vitamin capsules in which cannabis oil is commonly sold, and equipment used in its production.

A charge of possessing precursor substances was laid after police allegedly found Nurofen and Coldrex medications which contain pseudoephedrine, a key component in methamphetamine.

The trial is continuing.

Bellatrix; I wanted to include this article as well, because it goes into more details about what was actually found.

A hidden stash of Kinder Surprise toy eggs lived up to their name when police discovered they contained cannabis oil while raiding a Palmerston North home.

The High Court at Palmerston North yesterday was told five of the eggs found at Jason Andre Hikaka's home contained 35g of cannabis oil. Marijuana and materials used to make speed were also found during the raid last August 29.

Hikaka, 34, unemployed, was charged with producing cannabis oil, possession of cannabis oil for supply, and possession of cannabis plant for sale and for possessing materials used for making methamphetamine.

Bellatrix; this man was NOT unemployed! An unemployed drug dealer? I think not!

Police raided Hikaka's home after their suspicions were raised when earlier stopping him and a friend in a car and finding point bags -- a type of bag used to hold methamphetamine.

The other man Stephan Isaac Ede, 24, yesterday pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of methamphetamine for supply and possession of an offensive weapon. He was remanded in custody for sentencing on September 15.

Hikaka denies all charges. The trial is expected to take up three days.

In which cannabis oil is "commonly sold"? Not in my town. I've never even heard of cannabis oil being processed and sold until I read that article.
