No Proof Cannabis Use Induces Schizophrenia-Study

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - There is no scientific proof that cannabis use induces schizophrenia, Dutch scientists say, questioning recent research and an argument the Dutch government uses to crack down on marijuana-selling "coffee shops."

In an article in this week's Magazine for Psychiatry, a peer-reviewed journal, the three authors say that on the basis of currently available data "there is no justification for the proposed closure of coffee shops."

Often the first symptoms of schizophrenia occur during adolescence, when people start to experiment with drugs, but the scientists believe cannabis use only has a negative effect on people already genetically predisposed to the mental illness.

"It is therefore advisable that youngsters with a family history of schizophrenia and patients with a schizophrenic disorder be discouraged from using cannabis," the report said.

Subsequent Dutch governments have tightened rules on the sale of marijuana in government-regulated coffee shops, resulting in a significant reduction in the number of cannabis cafes.

A ban this year on alcohol in coffee shops will be followed by a ban on tobacco in 2005, outlawing all smoking on the premises.

There are around 780 coffee shops in the Netherlands of which 270 are in Amsterdam, according to 2002 figures. Moderator Note: Before cancelling your trip to the Netherlands, read on for correction from our Poster who lives in Amsterdam about this statement...

Sometimes I get a feeling I miss things.

Then sometimes I find out lazy reporters are missing things.

The "ban on alcohol in coffeeshops" which the report claims will take place this year is actually an "extinction-policy" that started in 1997. Since then no new licenses have been issued to sell both alcohol and cannabis. The existing "hasjcafés" (100 in '96; 60 to date) will have to choose between alcohol and cannabis by april 2007.

The ban on tobacco in coffeeshops (as part of the entire Horeca-branche) is not gonna happen, at least until 2009. That was just announced today.

Stop them solutions. Tell the Dutch who are behind this push to close cannabis cafe's that they have the rest of planet earth to enjoy if they want to live somewhere cannabis-phobic.

I'm currently posting on a Dutch forum with a lot of muslims. It was said the (suspected - I'm still pc ) killer of Van Gogh posted there. That fcuk wrote a pamphlet "to kill (or catch?) a wolf" where he calls on the "warriors of tawheed" to storm parliament and impose the sharia

In this pamphlet he also objects to the coffeeshop-policy, which in his warped view is a "fake-popsticle of democracy" (don't ask) and part of a conspiracy to supress the Allah-fearing muslims. A better representative of the Prohibition Church is hardly possible...

Another development is the formation of a political muslim party, still in the planning stages with no real program, but ... the irony .... they are said to oppose the tolerance of cannabis.

So, that's where I'm spending a lot of time right now, trying to show the Dutch muslim community the need for legalization and convince them prohibition is fascism
