Default Oh, those naughty older boys!!!

Study finds older boys are bad influence

CNN.com | August 19, 2004

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Parents who forbid their daughters to date older boys may be on the right track. A study published on Thursday finds that teenage girls who associate with older boys are more likely to smoke, drink and use drugs.

[Greenbudnote: I don't know about you other girls, but when I was a teenager my parents encouraged me to date older boys. This is junk science at it's best (or worst, as the case may be).]

The survey of 1,000 teens found that friends do influence behavior, or at least reflect behavior, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University said.

[Greenbudnote: Duh! They needed a study to tell them that?!]

"We found a tight connection between teen sexual behavior and dating and teen risk of smoking, drinking and using illegal drugs," said CASA chairman Joseph Califano, a former U.S. secretary of health, education and welfare.

The study found that 58 percent of girls who had boyfriends two years or more older drank alcohol, compared to 25 percent of the girls who dated boys their own age or not at all.

Fifty percent of the girls who went for older boys or men smoked marijuana, compared to 8 percent of the other girls, and 65 percent of these girls who preferred to date someone older than themselves smoked, compared to 14 percent girls who stuck to younger boys.

[Greenbudnote: Um, in my opinion, teenage girls want to date older boys because they are generally a little more mature than boys their age. Maybe these girls are just being exposed to things earlier than they eventually would be if they stuck to younger guys.]

The survey found that 45 percent of the teens said they had been to parties where alcohol was available, 30 percent had been to at least one party where marijuana was available and nine percent where cocaine or Ecstasy was available.

But teens welcome their parents' guidance on these issues, the survey found.

Asked in the telephone survey what they wished they could "honestly discuss with parents at dinner," 42 percent said dating and 30 percent said substance abuse. The survey had a margin of error of three points.

How much older? 2 years? 5? 10? Junk science at best.

I do agree though about it being junk science. It is a finding made after a very small sample was questioned.

Default Fascists need the divisiveness and fearmongering of the war on "druuuugs"

It’s all about children.
A child who gets through age 21
without smoking, using illegal drugs
or abusing alcohol is
virtually certain never to do so.

CASA is just another anti-marijuana propaganda mill, run by a man named Joe Califano.

Like the DEA, CASA appears at face value to be something people "should respect" but actually has no more credibilty than th DEA and forthe saem reasons. Their goal is disinformation about marijuana, more than anything else.

I was unaware that he was part of the warmongers at the American Enterprise Institute, but it is wholly unsurprising. It's "Fellows" list is a who's who of anti-constitutional warmongers like Micheal Ledeen and Newt Gingrich, as well as traitors of the PNAC - the group that was openly clamoring for a "new Pearl Harbor to unite Americans " behind their fascist vision of global American Empire prior to "9/11". Warmongering Capitalists...but then, I repeat myself. They conduct seminars on how to make scads of money off war.

This study clearly rubs the thorns that the Conservative Christian Right always howls about - teen sex, mary-ju-wanna, and mary-ju-wanna.

Marijuana prohibition is an extremely important value to these people and is further evidence that marijuana prohibition is far more important than most people ever consider.

Besides...getting federal grants to conduct studies to bash marijuana and try to prove lies told 70 years ago is better than doing real work, apparently.

I'd discount anything Califano asserts simply becasue he is in it for the money and power of "establishing a uniform ideolgy about marujuana's dangerousness".

Damn, Doc...Thought we were going to have a difference of opinion there again...Until I clicked on your CASA link.

I was thinking of this CASA, which I have been involved with a time or two.

Anyways, let me goose step back into line here....

HappyMan, I think it is very common. At least in my world. My brother's wife is 12 years younger than him. My first wife was 8 years younger than me and my current (and last) wife is 10 years younger.

Geeze Zombie, you just can't help yourself can you?

What does Joe Califano, the founder of the admittedly rediculous CASA organisation, and a speaker available from the American Entertainment Interational (AEI), have to do with American Enterprise Institute (AEI) - besides the fact that both groups share the same initials?

This is not the Kevin Bacon game .

I am highly qualified to work for the CASA organization you linked. Mentally ill and disturbed children are my specialty and - horrors! - I am one of the best in this area. (Yes.. that should be a scary claim...) Until the block grant scam initiated by a certain GrOuP of politicians thrashed such public services, causing my layoff, I used to provide professional assessment and therapy for such kids and situations, many of whom would curl most people's hair if they learned the gory details. 9 of us were serving about 420 families, but we were all laid-off. The families were left with 2 part time counselors and a dingy psychiatrist. It was likely illegal, but the County gets away with murder.

I will look into them to see if I can get hired in an area agency that supports them.

Moo-cho grassy ass for the link....

I learned about Califano years ago when I followed Cowans marijuananews.com. He despised Califano, and I quickly learned why. He probably has huge leathery wings under his $1000 suits.

Much like this perfidious freak, also of AEI fame:

In my college statistics and probabilities text book was the following line;

"There are three kinds of lies; lies, damnable lies, and stastics."

Dear xxdr zombiexx

Did you know that Joe Califano was HEW in the CARTER ADMINISTRATION? Probably no accident this was left out. If Jimmy Carter was truely in favor of decriminalizing marijuana, he did not let that influence his choice for Secretary of HEW. A quick search of "Califano+ marijuana" brings up a variety of reefermadness in his name! If this dude was GOP this would have been emphasised.
