| $65,000 Bail for Man on $.25m Ganja Charge Trinidad News | August 24th 2004 AN unemployed Belmont man appeared in court yesterday charged with the possession of over quarter million dollars worth or marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. Bellatrix; again with this "unemployed" bit. An unemployed person with 250 000 Trinidad dollars is still pretty well-off; that's over $53 000 CDN. Kenneth St Bernard, 24, from Chowcat Lane, Gonzales, Belmont, first appeared before Senior Magistrate Lianne Lee-Kim in the Port of Spain Magistrates' Fourth (A) Court. He is accused of possessing the marijuana at a house of another man in Maraval on Saturday when police, acting on a tip-off, made the bust around 5 a.m. He was charged by PC Nurse of the Western Division Task Force. A description of the 44 kilogrammes of compressed marijuana contained in two bags, which has a street value of $264,000, was given to the court by police prosecutor Acting Insp Jules George. The court was informed by George that a tracing for the accused would be available later in the afternoon and the matter was stood down. The matter was called again before Magistrate Avason Quinlan in the Port of Spain Magistrates' Fourth (C) Court. Quinlan granted St Bernard $65,000 bail with a surety to be approved by a Clerk of the Peace. She then transferred the matter to the Fourth (A) Court where it comes up again on September 2. Bellatrix; there are a very large number of marijuana related stories that come out of Trinidad and Tobago, and they are ALL about crime and punishment. I suspect that this is a nation with very prohibitionist policies. |
