| Marijuana Club Markets Medicine and Music The Orion Online| Brennan Purtzer | October 04, 2004 Everybody complained about it: the sun. After Chico chopped down the trees in City Plaza and removed the gazebo top from the stage, performing there midday has been excruciating. “It’s a hot-ass day,” said Kirk Williams, guitarist and vocalist for Brain in a Cage, the third metal group to play at the Chico Cannabis Club's second annual Chico Music Fest. Joel Castle, president of the club, took the stage between performances to explain the mission of his organization. Castle wore a red headband that was tied behind his long, straight hair. He stood about six feet tall, and his white, hemp-decorated aloha shirt rested above his grey cargo pants and sandals that he wore with socks. “Don’t judge by my appearance, but we are very professional,” Castle said. Castle wanted to inform the crowd of about 150 that there was a safe place in Butte County to get medical Marijuana and warn about the dangers of not having medicinal Marijuana available locally. “If I needed it, I would have to go to Oakland to get it," he said. "And then of course have to drive back stoned.” A voice out of the crowd asked, “Are you stoned?” Castle called back, “I’m stoned 24-seven.” The audience laughed. Bellatrix; YEAAAAH!!!!! Castle advocated joining the Prop 215 club where people can participate in the co-op of medicinal-Marijuana users and growers. “But if you come calling me or knocking on my door every day,” he said, “you’re going to go to the back of the line.” Before he left the stage, he held up a large bud and told the crowd to go to Mr. Kopy and follow the application directions there to win it. Castle’s message was a pledge for a more positive image of Marijuana users. Andrew Sale, president of Americanvotes.comand producer of the event, agreed. “We’re working to bring awareness and change the image from pot smokers as lazy persons to true members of society,” Sale said. Seven bands performed at the festival. Most were from Chico, but some came from as far away as Redding. The bands that performed were: Vext Intent, Dayz Ago, Brain in a Cage, Sleepyhead, Slaughterbox, Reverse Order and Esoteric. California State University Website |
