Default Aussie student faces death penalty in Bali

Aussie student faces death penalty

By Cindy Wockner in Bali | Sunday Tasmanian | Oct. 10, 2004

AN AUSTRALIAN student faces the death penalty after being arrested in Bali carrying 4.2kg of Marijuana allegedly hidden in a bodyboard bag.

Schapelle Leigh Corby, 27, from Tugun on the Gold Coast, was arrested on Friday afternoon at Bali's airport in Denpasar after an X-ray scan by customs officers showed an unusual package in her bodyboard bag.

When officers opened the bag, they found 4.2kg of Marijuana leaf in a large plastic bag with dried flowers on top in a poor attempt to disguise the package.

Drug-detector dogs were brought in and it is understood drug tests proved positive for an illegal drug.

Corby, who was travelling with several others, believed to be her siblings, was arrested on Friday afternoon after she had arrived on an Australian Airlines flight from Brisbane to Denpasar via Sydney.

Corby is now the only woman being held in the jail at the Polda police headquarters in Denpasar, Bali's capital city.

The group had planned a two-week stay in Bali and had return tickets to Australia booked for October 22.

For the first eight days, the group had reservations at a hotel resort in Kuta.

Under Indonesia's tough anti-drug laws, Corby could face the death penalty or life imprisonment if convicted.

A more lenient sentence for Corby would be 20 years in jail and a fine of one billion rupia ($A150,000).

A Brisbane man was arrested last month after allegedly trying to export tens of thousands of methamphetamine tablets into Australia, and is also in jail in Bali.

Corby's travelling companions, along with their locally hired lawyer, visited her in the jail yesterday and police sources said the young woman was in tears after they left.

The Sunday Telegraph understands that Corby has so far refused to speak to police about the allegations.

It is understood the bodyboard bag was not locked or secured and one police source said it appeared to have been an extremely amateurish bid to bring drugs into Bali.

[Suetaznote: The sad fate of a naive young woman that maybe just wanted to smoke some weed and ride some waves. Now she faces death or possibly 20 years in prison all thanks to the war on drugs that the US government insists on forcing on the rest of the world.]

Naive?

Smuggling 9 1/4 pounds of weed into Indonesia equates to naivete?

Sounds like somebody was looking to make some money...

Whatever man, she could have been planning on staying there for awhile and smoking up mad people with her stash... She probably was going to sell it, but why should that give them the excuse to execute a visitor from another country... Ignorance at its worst...

And if you really think about it, many equitorial countries supply a lot of outdoor-grown bud... Strict drug laws there is just another means of absolute population control.

Let's assume the very absolute worst: this "Schappelle" girl was a ruthless drug trafficker, peddling her 10 pounds of pot to innocent Indonesian children. So what? Have you ever bothered to breathe the f*ckin AIR in Indonesia? I guarantee you that weed smoke is easier on your lungs by a factor of 10. There's no way you'll convince me that ANY amount of marijuana, destined for ANY purpose, poses enough of a threat to warrant executing or imprisoning anybody. God bless the f*ckin USA, but please, bless it in the same fashion you blessed Soddom and Gomorrah...

Oh, and don't think the US is 100% to blame: sure we shoved these draconian policies down the throats of the rest of the world, but the top echelons of the Indonesian government are just as bad as the most miserable scum-sucking CEOs or Presidents that we've ever had.

'Tis indeed a shame, but what's with the US-bashing? We're not forcing anyone to do anything - they've chosen to do what they think is in their best interest. The Netherlands have told us to go eff ourselves and our drug laws while the Indonesians have decided to start putting people to death for posession. *shrug*

Besides, IIRC, the Aussies have much more influence over that portion of the world than we do. So maybe it's a problem with the Aussie government? (Anyone but the representatives of Bali, of course.)

The US intervenes internationally only to persue its own interests. This has been the US policy for over 200 years with the exception of a few events. It is usually for political gain or power. Some examples are US support of Afghan troops/Bin Laden family in the 80s versus the Soviet occupiers. We knew most of their money came from opium and weed (Afghanistan) and still supported them with superior weapons.

Alucard is right about the draconian policies, and some of them are directly influenced by the US... But I'm sure there are other local authorities that push for the policies as well (that are to blame). The interests for the US would still be money and political gain.

An Australian invidual chooses to smuggle pot into Indonesia. +

Indonesia chooses to make drug smuggling punishable by Death.

and the U.S. is responsible?

Oh wait, I forgot. The United States exists, so no other person, group or nation has free will, or has to the face consequences of their decisions.

Yep.

Just like every other nation-state in the world, the US acts in her own self-interest.
