Default MT: Montana to vote on medical Marijuana

Ballot to include pot, gay marriage
Russ Miller | Bigfork Eagle | 10/20/2004

Voters will be asked to decide on several constitutional amendments and initiatives, ranging from the seemingly mundane to the hotly controversial, in the general election Nov. 2.
Defining marriage, changing term limits, increasing mining opportunities, or allowing some people to smoke Marijuana top the controversy list.

{Snip!}

•Initiative 148: Allowing medical use of Marijuana.

It is a dangerous drug, according to opponents of this measure. If it passes, I-148 will undermine the state's drug-enforcement priorities, the federal Food and Drug Administration, and the scientific process of approving new drugs that protect citizens from unsafe, ineffective drugs.

Even if I-148 passes, they say, federal law would still make it illegal to grow, sell, purchase or use Marijuana even with a doctor's prescription, so therefore, it's a wasted effort.

(BuzzNote: Another typical Prohibitionist lie! The other states that have passed medical MJ laws have proceeded without fereral approval. Next month, the US Supreme Court will hear arguments declaring it unconstitutional for the feds to interfere with state medical MJ programs.)

Proponents, however, say Marijuana helps people ease the pain of debilitating medical conditions.

They say several medical organizations support the measure, and there are federal laws now existing that protect doctors and patients who prescribe or use Marijuana to fight pain.

The federal government actually has been providing Marijuana to some medical patients since 1978 on a limited basis, they add.

A person with cancer, glaucoma, AIDS or other disease that produces wasting, severe or chronic pain, nausea, seizures, spasms could benefit from the medical use of Marijuana under a doctor's supervision as I-148 stipulates, according to proponents.

{Snip! to end}

Skip ahead, Skip ahead. I want to be able to vote about the normal use of marijuana, but i suppose this is a step in the right direction. Now when i go to the polls, will there be that paragraph describing I-148 like the one in the article, because though i may not be fooled, others very well could be.

In Alaska they will be voting to make it LEGAL. Which is good, because if this passes other states will look upon Alaska and hopefully say, "See, look at them. It's not hurting anybody."

California, Nevada, and Colorado will be saying, "Damn! All our tourist dollars are going to Alaska!"

When money talks, state governments listen.
