Default CAN: B.C. Tops For Pot Smokers

B.C. tops for pot smokers: report
CBC.CA | 11/24/2004

VANCOUVER - A new survey by Health Canada shows B.C. has more Marijuana users than any other province in Canada.

More than half the British Columbians surveyed say they have smoked pot in their lifetime – with 17 per cent saying they have smoked Marijuana in the past year.

That compares to 44 per cent of Canadians who have used Marijuana in their lifetime – with 14 per cent smoking the drug in the past year.

The survey also indicates that he number of pot smokers has nearly doubled nationally in the past decade.

Males were more likely than females to use pot, as were those who have never been married.

The study found the use of cocaine and crack also rose from 0.7 per cent in 1994 to 1.9 per cent in 2004.

The survey questioned nearly 14,000 Canadians, asking about the use of alcohol, Marijuana and other drugs.

But the Centre for Addictions Research of B.C. says the new numbers should be read with caution when comparing them with the figures from the past.

"The surveys that were used are slightly different and they were administered in different ways, and so sometimes we have to be careful in looking at what those results actually mean," says Dan Reist.

He says his staff will now combine these numbers with its own drug-use surveys to identify specifically which groups are most at risk from increased alcohol and drug use.

What those results mean is prohibition hasn't worked at all!! Over half of the people in BC have smoked pot in there lifetime. Makes me proud to live here. Which that many people who have smoked pot, the laws are bound to change, eventually. I wonder what the US Drug Czar will have to say about this!

The World Cup or an Olympic event needs to be held in B.C.

I'll be there, in no time at all.
