| Bush Shows His Funny Side The Star.com | 12/01/2004 OTTAWA — Tongue firmly in cheek, President George W. Bush paid tribute today to his mythical Canadian supporter, Jean Poutine. While he may have the reputation of a mangler of the English language, Bush used his Canadian visit to show that he — or his speech writers — can deliver a wit-laden line. [SNIP!] Bush was asked if proposed Canadian legislation to decriminalize Marijuana would be a problem for the Canada-U.S. border. "It will probably affect those who use Marijuana a lot more than it will affect the border," he said. (BuzzNote: That sounds encouraging. Canada would become the new Spring Break destination and the long-oppressed citizens of Florida would get a vacation. )

| "It will probably affect those who use Marijuana a lot more than it will affect the border," Now that's a loaded statement. Does it mean it will make them high, alleviate their pain, or does it mean they'll get busted? I'm betting on the latter. Dennis |

| Maybe I just have no sense of humor, but I don't get how that's funny. In the slightest. I view it as a transparent, denegrating (to MMJ users) attempt to evade a serious question so that he wouldn't have to give a serious answer. Yes, I suppose it was CLEVER, but it sure as hell wasn't FUNNY. It was callous.

| To each his own, I guess. I found it amusing. ![]()

| I took it to mean that it would primarily effect pot smokers in Canada - that the Prez was being realistic for once. Pot is easily available in Canada. People who want to smuggle 15 grams or less (the "decriminalized" quantity) are already doing so. People who are smuggling real weight will continue to do so. The net effect of this phony decrim (which raises the penalties for anything over 15 grams) on Americans will be Business as Usual. I'm hoping the bill doesn't pass. It's actually a step backwards on the path to real decriminalization. It will impose stiff fines for "offenses" that are currently not prosecuted at all (most of the time), invade people's privacy by mandating roadside blood tests, and raise the penalties for all other Marijuana "offenses", in some cases doubling them. Some 80% of Canada's exports go to the US. Some 25% of US exports go to Canada. Does anyone really think American Big Business would allow its own federal government to interfere with such a large segment of their trade? This would be an interesting test to see who really owns the American government: Big Business or the Religious Right. |

| If it's so funny, it should be easy to explain the source of the humor. So, what is it? What's so funny about it? That's like someone asking, "Roe vs Wade is about abortion, but how will it affect the rights of single mothers, specifically, in the US?" and being answered, "It'll probably affect Roe and Wade more than it will affect single mothers!!" Oh, yeah, that's friggin' hilarious. A six year old can come up with a joke like that, and while some people find such things humorous, I guess plainsman got it right: to each his own. I guess I just prefer intellectual humor, humor that you actually have to think about to "get". But then, I know some people quite a bit older than 6 who go around whispering, "Losers say what..." and then when you say "What?", they go "HAHAHAHA!!! You said what!!! Hahahaha omg!!!!!oneone!!!" Let me put it this way. I'll bet the reporter, who was trying to get an answer to a serious question, didn't find it particularly amusing. I wonder if the President answered him at all, or just went on to the next guy when he realized that his "joke" successfully sidestepped the question so he didn't have to answer it? |

| I am not amused either, Cassius. Tjis man mystifies me to nooooo end. How did he manage to become king... I mean "Emperor"... I mezn, "president"...? "Jean Poutine"....? How droll! "Gunna ride yer Hoss down to da Hossy-enda and git ya some beans an' cown-bread, Tex?" And that other thing, what a farkin' liar! Either Cellucci, Walters, Randy White, et al are lying, or George is, because everybody involved with this on THAT side of the ledger ALL say, "what about border slow downs? We have ta keep chuckin' people in jail, otherwise the border might slow to a CRAWL! Think of the money... I mean think of the children...'s money!" |

| Humor is hard to explain imho. It's just a matter of personal preference. The "source" to me was viewing the border as an entity in its own right. It won't notice....Ah never mind. ![]() I won't put somebody down for enjoying "Mad TV" kind of humor anymore than I would for someone who liked the "Frazier" kind. Too close to "you're not good enough/smart enough/mature enough if you like that kind of joke". |

| I think that the fact the president made use of humor relating to Marijuana decriminalization is positive. Prohibitionist types typically, at least to my experience, do not see Marijuana as anything other than a dangerous drug to be outlawed and it's users locked up, certainly not to be joked about. Maybe with Ashcroft on his way out, Bush is changing his attitude towards mj. I'm smoking joe! ho ho ho!!! As for the joke, my guess is the implied idea of an inanimate object, the border, using Marijuana is supposed to be funny. It's weak, but remember, this is George Bush, not George Carlin! ![]() |
