Default DNK: Hippie Area Left Out Of Copenhagen Guidebook

Hippie Area Left Out Of Copenhagen Guidebook
Canada.com | 12/02/2004

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - Pusher Street, a popular but unofficial main drag in Copenhagen's famed hippie enclave, was left out of the latest edition of the city's main guidebook.

The sparsely paved street in the Christiania area is known for its hashish trade. In 2000, the Krak publishing house put Pusher Street on its Copenhagen map because "we got so many requests from people," said Krak spokesman Kim Chabert.

But in the 2005 guide, which came out in November, the location of the famed enclave is just a blank with the name Christiania across it.

Christiania took root in 1971 when dozens of hippies moved into a derelict 18th-century fort behind the capital's old ramparts. The area became a counterculture oasis with psychedelic-coloured buildings, free marijuana, no government, no cars and no police.

In the early 1980s, residents, tourists and hashish dealers began openly buying and selling hashish and marijuana from two dozen colourful booths on Pusher Street, which winds through the heart of Christiania. Though illegal, sales were tolerated by police and successive governments until 2001, when the Danish government vowed to end them. Residents eventually tore down the booths because they feared police action.

In March the government said Christiania could remain an alternative lifestyle community as long as residents obey the law, pay rent and stop selling drugs.

What the hell kind of a name is Pusher Street? That name has plenty of negative connotations...
