| Canadian Drug-Sniffing Dog Will Make House Calls 02-04-2005 | Astrid Poei | MetroNews A Canadian couple has launched a business offering worried parents or concerned employers private drug-detection services that will search homes and offices for everything from marijuana to heroin. Russ Rathy of Pense, Saskatchewan, started the home-based business, Crusader Resources, along with his wife, after buying a young German shepherd trained to sniff out drugs. The dog, named Alis Vicona, cost C$20,000 ($16,000) and can detect drugs or the residue of drugs in buildings or on clothing, even after 30 days. So far, the couple has had clients that range from concerned parents to curious employers. "If you suspect your kids of drug use, this is one way to make sure there's no drugs in the house," Russ Rathy, 39, told Reuters from his home near the western province's capital of Regina. "Obviously it gives you a little more leeway rather than waiting for them to become an addict and put them in rehabilitation -- or being picked up by the police and now they have a criminal record and their future is pretty much shot with that." Once the dog detects drugs, Rathy said it is up to the client to decide what the consequences should be. "Whether they contact police or flush it down the toilet, it's left up to them," he said. "We'll obviously make recommendations to call authorities." Rathy, who says they started the business more out of parental concerns than a bid to make money, charges only C$20 ($16) for the search of a private home or vehicle. For businesses it costs a bit more, depending on the frequency of searches and the length of the contract. He uses a portion of the business income to fund free drug awareness presentations at schools and non-profit organizations. ($1=$1.24 Canadian)

![]() I may start a similar service, employing drug-sniffing dogs to let traffickers know if they've made their shipments undetectable. I bet it would pay a lot better than walking the other side of the street! ![]()

| And I thought we were having things hard here in the United States. Canada has turned into the German SS with the german shepherds.

| This does not represent Canada. These are just some Neo conservative Nazi''s who want to make money of other peoples grief. There is no evidence in unbaised research that shows a correlation between drug USE (NOT ABUSE there is a difference) and work preformance. Oh and it is sort of against the constitution for employers to bring in drug dogs or even do drug testing. But who cares about the constition anyways I mean it only limits our ability to protect THE CHILDREN. And think about the dog. Dogs are kind hearted creatures, they wouldn't rat people out of their own free will. It's their Nazi ass slave drivers that make them do it.

| Why don't they train the dog to do something useful like sniff out car keys or the tv remote? On the other hand, if folks want to know if their kids are smokin' this is better than callin' the cops. Of course actually TALKING to the kids just might be the best solution. Think? |

| There is a downside to this. They mention about having the dog sniff clothing that can have a drug smell up to 30 days. What if someones kid let their friend borrow clothes which usually happens, if they use drugs or are around people who do, that scent will get on their clothes, they then are given their clothes back after with a drug scent. The dog smells it, their parents then falsley accuse their child of using drugs! To some kids who don't use drugs at all, this would be a big arguement between them and their parents, bein falsley accused of something they didn't do, feeling of mis trust, this would do more harm than good much like prohibition itself does more harm than good! Someone could go to Amsterdam and come back within those 30 days, how could they get in trouble for that if they smoked pot where it was legal. I mean it's no different than someone under 21 going to a island where theres no drinking age and gettin trashed, then come back to the U.S and talk about it, can't get charged for it cause no laws were broken! The people who have this dog, they were probably big stoners when they were younger, then act like they never did it and try and get everyone else in trouble, it's possible! Anything to make a dollar haha. This is a big invasion of privacy, then again who needs privacy, everyones gotta know someones buisness today Kids shouldn't do drugs anyway though, but the employee thing is crossin the line. I'm not gonna talk about hard drugs but something like pot, if someone smokes it on their own time but comes into work, is able to focus and do their job, i could careless if they use it on their own time, that's their buisness. |

| sounds like a good business. You could even employ the dog to find your stash which you've lost. The owners of the dog don't need to know that you wanna find it so you can smoke it again ![]() |
