Default USA: What Won't Play in This Year's Super Bowl

What Won't Play in This Year's Super Bowl
02-05-2005 | DrugPolicy.Org

The millions of people who watch the Super Bowl this Sunday will be inundated with commercials promoting everything from sandwiches to cars. But you'll be happy to know that sports fans won't be subjected to another round of outrageous government ads comparing marijuana smokers to terrorists, claiming that smoking marijuana will make you shoot your neighbor, or declaring marijuana the most dangerous drug in America.

Because these ads won't run, taxpayers will save millions of dollars - and they have you to thank.

For years our members have encouraged us to take on those costly anti-drug ads that do nothing to reduce drug use. We listened and then went to work. Now, the government's propaganda machine is on its last legs and we need your help to finally dismantle it.

With the help of thousands of people around the country we were able to get those unbelievable "smoke a joint, you're a terrorist" ads off the air. In fact, the government hasn't run an ad like that since 2003 (although it continues to run other anti-marijuana ads.) You may also remember that we were successful last year in stopping Congress from allowing the drug czar to use the ad campaign budget to run ads against marijuana-related ballot measures and pro-reform Congressional candidates.

But reform isn't enough - the entire program should be eliminated. The government has no business spending millions of dollars in taxpayer money on a campaign that, as the government's own studies show is ineffective and counterproductive.

Thanks to you we have already succeeded in cutting the budget from $180 million to $120 million. This is a significant cut by Washington standards. In fact, a spokesman for the drug czar's office said those cuts were the reason they were not running anti-marijuana ads during the Super Bowl this year. The government can no longer afford to buy Super Bowl ads because of your work!

To top it all off, the program is now embroiled in controversy. A recent Washington Post article reported that the drug czar's office sent local news stations across the country "covert propaganda" last year. This propaganda included several segments that used independently hired voice-over specialists to pose as reporters and read from a script prepared by the White House. A Government Accountability Office investigation found that the drug czar illegally spent $115,000 to produce and distribute these segments, and the ads cost over 2 million taxpayer dollars to air!

It's time to move in for the kill. The program's budget has been cut and The Drug War extremists weakened. Five government studies have concluded the program is a waste of money and another study is on the way, Members of Congress are expressing outrage over the rampant fraud and abuse in the program.

Will you help us eliminate this program once and for all? Together we can do it.

is 'the program' the drug war in general, or just a specific govt organization?

Default People don't know what they are talking about

Comparing marijuana smokers to terrorists, claiming that smoking marijuana will make you shoot your neighbor, or declaring marijuana the most dangerous drug in America.

These people are the worst people to listen to. They have never tried marijuana before or they would know that when you smoke marijuana you get relaxed, are happy and clam. You just level out. People don't shoot people over marijuana there is many more reasons behind the shootings. Believe me marijuana does not make you want to shoot people it does the opposite of that or I’d be in prison right now. That not all it does it has medical uses too. So are you saying that those people that use it for medical uses are terrorists too. People wake up and look around look at the friends and family I bet you know people that are potheads and there are fine or you wouldn't be around if they shot people. Right?

People need to try marijuana to see what it is like before they judge marijuana. So don't talk down marijuana unless you have tried it or have been there.

Instead of worrying about marijuana look out for meth heads and crack heads they are the ones to worry about. marijuana is natural so just make it tolerated and not legal for a 6 month trail or longer to see what is would be like for a test. Then make a decision. Thank you for your time.

Given the references to the "drug czar" it appears "the program" refers to the anti-drug propaganda policy of the DEA.

I'm smoking joe and would like to say hello!
ps
more good news is word that this year there will be no spots featuring gas-passing horses, crotch-biting dogs...

Another thing about marijuana, someone might know someone who died from using a drug like heroin, but then if they hear of someone smoking pot they scream at them for it. I'm a fan of the band sublime, for those of you who know of them or listen to their music, their lead singer died back in 1996 from a heroin overdose. They started another band, just without the lead singer, they were interviewed on a radio station i listend to a few years ago. Even though their lead singer/friend died from heroin, they still support legalization of marijuana. They just said people should just drink or smoke pot in moderation. Other people though, they know someone who died from heroin, then say WELL POT SHOULD REMAIN ILLEGAL!

You cannot compare pot to heroin, only reason why some people do is that whole gateway drug b/s which Harry Anslinger made up in the first place, it originated from him when saying pot was the most dangerous drug known to mankind didn't work. He then started the pot is a gateway drug slogan. I think it was back in 1934 when he said pot was the most dangerous drug known to mankind and talked of it making people violent. Then in 1948 he recanted his story and said it was a peace making drug and would make people not want to fight in wars, then started claiming it would cause a spread of communism. Congress listend to this guys b/s over and over and each time he made up more and more lies.

We blame pot for violence, now we sort of relate back to those days by now saying pot is responsible for terrorists having money. What's also funny is they blamed pot for terrorists having money when we all know a few corrupt corporations in the U.S were the ones funding them millions of dollars over seas. They talked about it on tv and how one guy wanted one investigated for it, guy found out a corporation he was in had funded millions to terrorist groups in the phillipines. Some of these groups were also linked to kidnapping american tourists on vacation over there and killing them. They also said Al Quaida had connections to some of these groups over there as well.

Like all the pot in this country comes from afghanistan, pot was around for 3000 years, it's grown all over the world except for in some climates where it's impossible. Pot was around before alcohol, people talk all kinds of trash about people using pot for medical use but yet support FDA approved drugs that kill hundreds of thousands of people. For a medical drug, i will trust pot over anything made in a lab.

I bet most of the people in these drug commericals or all of them never smoked a joint in their life, ok read this script, ok heres your money, good work guys!

I remember back when i was in dare, this was back in 5th grade, this was over 10 years ago, teacher and cop told us not to ask the high schoolers who were coming in to talk to us if they ever used drugs. Now that's education, you can't even ask if someone used it but they are there to tell you not to do it haha. In fact i'm sure a few of them smoked pot too but they aren't gonna tell ya, they are just going to tell you not to do it. We couldnt' ask them if they ever used drugs but they are gonna try and tell us they know what they are talking about when they never experienced sh*t or may have but couldn't tell us! After all, if you are told that pot makes you crazy and you have someone that uses it to talk to and you ask them if they smoke pot and what it's like and they say well it's kind of like a feeling of being drunk, your gonna say well gee isn't that like the feeling you would get from legal alcohol. Or they might say well i smoked it, it made me feel really happy and just laugh, your gonna question them and say ok how is this a threat to society?

I liked the commercials where they show people jobless and being high, how many people who are jobless afford pot? Can't get stoned all the time unless you have money for that weed or have a garden somewhere but even that hobby would cost someone money to have wouldn't it? Then theres the just tell your brother you forgot to pick him up cause you were smoking pot, he'll understand commercial. I'm sure everyone knows atleast one person if not a dozen that go out, get drunk with their friends and forgot to do a certain task. I don't want alcohol to ever become illegal again, it's choice but what i'm getting at is everything they throw toward pot, they get the idea from what alcohol does to people. That is the only way they really get the propaganda to remain alive but on the side they will throw in the pot funds terrorism bullsh*t. I like the shirts they have out now, on them they say, "fight the war on terror", "grow your own"! The pot funds terrorism slogan back fired cause people with common sense know that homegrown pot doesn't get connected with bin laden or money if we are talkin personal use. Commercial pot/large scale grows on the other hand i'm sure the pot gets sold but that also doesn't mean the money is going toward terrorism, it's more than likely going toward the average citizen whos just trying to make extra income on the side to help out his/her family, maybe for college money, a new car, house, better life but not toward things of evil.

In the paper there was a grow bust awhile back, they put in the paper that these people had high intensity lights, fertilizers, they just tried to make it look like a big find, it actually was though, i will admit that, these people had 1000 plants growing. What i'm getting at though is this equipment can be used to grow legal house plants but the second it gets used for marijuana plants they try and make it sound so sophisticated. I rolled my eyes and laughed when i read it, OMG fertilizers, soils, high intensity lights, it's natural items you would find at a green house shop so who really cares. They could have saved the trouble of writing this big article and just said police found 1000 pot plants growing indoors and left it at that. Everything else they had was legal to use and not a big deal.

When pot gets voted down from legalization they make it sound like only the people who don't use it vote it down. Like some of these big pot dealers would really vote to legalize it haha, if that happend value would go down and they wouldn't get their big money they make from it being illegal.

In conclusion legalize pot and put the tax payers money toward something that works. In the movie "GRASS" by 1998 they said this country, the U.S spent over 300 billion dollars to fight the war on just marijuana alone not including other drugs! I guess they figure after another 300 billion more they will win the war on pot lol. When they got to that part of the movie they even had a toilet flush in the background, probably to let people with no common sense realize where that money went because it didn't even stop marijuana. Then people complain how theres no money in the budget for this or that, things this country needs theres no money for, the money they spend to fight pot, theres your healthcare, theres your funds toward education, money could go toward getting us out of debt, etc. Legalizing pot would make this country billions of dollars.
