Default USA: Youngsters Use Inhalants More Than Marijuana, Survey Says

Youngsters Use Inhalants More Than Marijuana, Survey Says
More Attention Must Be Paid To Huffing, Agency Says
Internet Broadcasting Systems | Channel Cincinnati | 03/17/2005

Experts say a higher percentage of youngsters used inhalants rather than marijuana in the past year.

They say that points to a need for more attention to the problem.

Westley Clark, director of the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, said the dangers of inhalants must be underscored, because they're readily available and legal.

Hair spray, deodorant, nail polish remover and paint thinner all can be dangerous. They are common products that are legal but contain substances that affect how a brain works.

More than 8 percent percent of 12- and 13-year-olds said in a survey that they have tried huffing.

Meanwhile, only 4 percent of parents of sixth- to eighth-graders believe their child has tried inhalants -- 22 percent of sixth- to eight-graders report having tried them.

Clark also said studies show children who use inhalants move on to marijuana as they get older. Thirty five percent of adults who had started using inhalants before they turned 13 were dependent on alcohol or another drug in the past year.

Only 10 percent of people who never used inhalants were addicted.

In a news release, the agency also said that 12- and 13-year-olds who used inhalants were six times as likely to have stolen or tried to steal items worth more than $50.

Clark's remarks coincided with the release of supporting data. Next week is National Inhalants and Poisons Week.

The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Wow, the only time I've ever heard of inhalents being used by anyone would be the homeless or in small, white trash towns... Crazy. What a terrible way to get a buzz.

So where are the drug warriors at? Shouldn't they be petitioning congress to outlaw inhalants? My God, this stuff is soooo much worse than cannabis ever was. The outcry from the government is deafening (yea right).

I think the issue here is the lack of education towards these kids about why inhalents are so bad for them. Now I am not saying proagandize the hell out of it. I am arguing that this particular method to achieve a high tends not to be mentioned. At least not when I was in school.

It wasn't until late high school, when I hurt myself pretty bad, that I took a health course instead of a P.E. class, before I ever heard anything about inhalents.

Perhaps this is a good time for those anti-drug folks to lay off their war on marijuana and focus on something far more dangerous to society.

Great Article Buzzby

True, I remember learning about drugs in high school health and I don't ever recall inhalants being mentioned let alone discussed. I first learned about them when a friend at a party was sitting in the garage huffing on a gas can. Common sense told me sucking down gas fumes just couldn't be good, he looked like such an idiot doing it. That's pretty scary now though being a parent, some of the luckier kids will end up with brain damage, but that sh*t will kill you.

My daughter told me that her drug education warned about the dangers of inhalants. Unfortunately it also issued a lot of lies about marijuana. Since they knew they were being lied to about pot they assumed they were being lied to about huffing as well. Once you catch someone in a lie their credibility becomes very doubtful.

You make an excelent point; how are we suppose to get the correct facts out about far more dangerous drugs when lies are being spread about something as silly as marijuana. Perhaps it is up to parents to hop on board the band-wagon, so to speak, when it comes to actually educating their kids about some of the simplist things. It almost seems that the more and more society in the states gears itself towards working and making that almighty dollar, society has to put even more pressures on its schools to teach. Vivi la parents (I think I spelt that correctly, my french is a little rusty).

---------------

As a side note, Rothschild: Questioning the government and not taking things at face value are great concepts; however, don't forget that the government is entiled to tell some truth and we do have a say every few years.
