| CU Student Leaders OK Pro-Marijuana Vote Supporters Say Pot Is Safe Alternative To Alcohol Associated Press | TheDenverChannel | date Student leaders at the University of Colorado have approved a referendum asking school officials to acknowledge that marijuana is a safe alternative to alcohol. Supporters said they want university leaders to at least understand that the drug causes fewer problems on campus than drinking. Freshman Vanessa Cisneros said she's getting a lot of support for her proposal. She said many people die each year from alcohol -- not from marijuana. If the proposal gets on the April ballot and is approved, the university will not be required to change its policies. Bob Maust is the university's alcohol-education coordinator. He said there isn't "political will" to bring about that kind of change. The punishments are about the same for underage drinkers and students caught smoking marijuana. Most spend a semester on probation, attend a drug and alcohol program and perform community service.
