Default CA: Santa Barbara school coaches worry more about pot use than steroids among athletes

Santa Barbara school coaches worry more about pot use than steroids among athletes
March 27, 2005 | kesq.com | AP

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. High school coaches in Santa Barbara say forget steroids, it's marijuana that is raising the biggest concerns for young athletes.
Santa Barbara High baseball coach Fred Warrecker tells the News-Press that he and other coaches are -- quote -- "more worried about kids smoking pot or drinking alcohol" than about steroids.

Several coaches say it would be a good idea to begin regularly testing teen athletes for marijuana. They say that they would support a random drug-testing program -- similar to the one instituted at Carpinteria High -- at the three Santa Barbara School District high schools.

I'd be more worried about their caffeine intake than about their marijuana intake.

Yes, I'm that concerned.

The article doesn't say why the coach is more worried about pot than steroids. It seems that this is part of the unspoken belief "Marijuana is Evil". It's not going to harm the athletes physically, like steroids and alcohol. As long as the kids aren't stoned when they play it's not going to hurt their performance.

If athletes don't perform up to standards they can be cut from the team. Other factors that involve self-control, like eating and drinking, are left up to the individual. If an athlete doesn't show up in condition to play he's penalized for his performance, not what he did to screw it up. In the case of marijuana, it's neither performance enhancing nor is it harmful to performance unless the athlete is high at game time.

So what's the problem?

Why should they be concerned, pro athletes use steroids, they must not be that bad, but marijuana, that stuff might make them CRAZY....

Yeah, no kidding. There are plenty of things that normal people ingest that can reduce performance, from carbonated beverages to carbohydrated foods. You do see coaches going around telling their athletes not to drink soda, but you don't see them testing for it, do you? And ultimately, if the athlete walks up to his coach and tells him he just downed an 8-oz can of mountain dew before the game, most likely all the coach would say is, "That's your choice."

If I were a coach. I'd be more worried about my little athletes jerking their gerkin. It releases "EVIL!!!!!!!" chemicals that create pleasure and relax the athletes. Which we all know can make them go blind and make us lose the game.

---If we lived in LaLa land where Marijuana use actually did hurt performance in sports, if they weren't stoned when they play.

Marijuana is more harmful than steroids?

http://kidshealth.org/parent/emotion...eroids_p3.html

This is not simply wrong; it's criminal! Any high-school coach who believes pot is worse than steroids should be fired. They obviously care NOTHING about the young people under their care and are only interested in winning as many games as possible. They see their tenure only as a steppingstone to a job at a major university or with the pros.
Maybe it's simply a case of ignorance. A certain SBHS coach needs to do some homework on this subject. I like to think of myself a a laid back individual but this ticks me off!!!

300 and counting...

I don't think they ever implied that it was performance enhancing. Just that it's worse than steroids for some unlisted reason (aka, reefer madness).
