Default GBR: Blair: Marijuana Policy Might Be Mistake

Blair: Marijuana Policy Might Be Mistake
UPI | 05/04/2005

Lancashire, England, May. 4 (UPI) -- Prime Minister Tony Blair told worried parents in Lancashire, England, the government may have been wrong to reduce the penalties for marijuana possession.

Blair, meeting with patients, said marijuana is "not quite as harmless as people make out," thereby issuing the most striking acknowledgement so far that ministers believe the controversial policy was a mistake, The Telegraph reported.

The government 15 months ago reclassified cannabis from a Class B to a Class C drug. Police were told people possessing small quantities of marijuana should not be arrested.

Blair, a member of the Labor Party, made the comments during an election push in which he portrayed Liberal Democrats as being soft on the issue of drugs.

Could we have expected anything else from Bush's lapdog?

Blair also made this comment:
Quote:
"there is NO DOUBT at all that the development of weapons of mass destruction by Saddam Hussein poses a severe threat not just to the region, but to the wider world. He is a threat to his own people and to the region and, if allowed to develop these weapons, a threat to us also."

The art of leadership is saying no, not yes. It is very easy to say yes.
I guess that doesn't apply to saying no to an illegal war.

and
Quote:
"It's difficult sometimes in politics, but occasionally you have got to know when to say sorry."
What if your victims can't hear your apology Mr. Bliar?
Dead people usually don't respond to apologies.

Uh yeah, he knows what he's talking about huh?

Someone in the press should have asked Blair what his qualifications as a medical expert are.

This has nothing to do with Bush. Blair was in favor of the original reclassification from "B" to "C". He's been catching hell from the Tories about it, today is the General Election, and Blair was trying to take off some of the heat.

I really hope this was just lip service and he does not take action on this. The prohibitionists here in the states would love to say "The UK tried decriminalization and it was a complete failure." I can see that ONDCP quotes already.

Anyways according to previous articles it saved 199,000 hours law enforcement hours and use among young people did not increase. How could this policy be a failure. It is an outstanding success.

I hope people in the UK are reading about this and are doing everything they can to stop the reversal. From what I understand the liberals may have gained more ground in the UK which will create stiffer opposition to a reversal which is good. We'll see what happens.
