Default CA: Man Accused Of Bringing Pot Brownies To Hospital

Man Accused Of Bringing Pot Brownies To Hospital
Monterey County Herald | 06/09/2005

SAN LUIS OBISPO (AP) - A Morro Bay man faces up to five years in prison if convicted of bringing marijuana-laced brownies to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center.

Meant as a joke about "national stoners day" on April 20, the pot brownies sickened 11 hospital employees, including a nurse who found himself fumbling with a medicine-filled syringe that he was about to administer to a patient, prosecutors said.

Arthur Wayne Bethel, 29, was charged this week with a felony count of willfully mingling a harmful substance with food, Deputy District Attorney Linda Luong said. Bethel, who hasn't been arrested, will be arraigned June 20.

Bethel is the husband of a hospital clerk, according to Monday's complaint obtained by The Tribune. Bethel told police he made the brownies for the floor's director after joking with her about April 20, known to pot aficionados as national stoners day, records showed.

But Bethel denied putting marijuana in the treats.

Hospital and police tests of the workers' urine revealed marijuana, Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Brown said.

Police also found traces of marijuana in the remnants of one brownie and the plastic bag and plate that had contained the treats, records showed.

''No patient was ever put in danger,'' hospital spokesman Ron Yukelson said.

(BuzzNote: The press since Monday's Supreme Court decision in Gonazles v. Raich has been overwhelmingly positive towards legalizing medical marijuana. Let's all refrain from stupid irresponsible acts that reinforce the stereotypes about marijuana users.)
