| Ontario Man Successfully Shows 746 Grams Of Marijuana Were For Personal Use Norml.org | 12/7/2005 GUELPH, Ont.-- A British Columbia man found with 746 grams of marijuana beat drug trafficking charges today after convincing an Ontario judge he had intended to smoke all of it by himself. Carlos Lamprea, a home renovator, pleaded guilty to possessing the drug, but was found not guilty of possessing the marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. Lamprea, 56, claimed the drugs were intended for his personal use. "He has a record of a terrible abuse of this drug," his lawyer Kenneth Smith said. "It's conduct that's shameful." Lamprea has six prior convictions for possessing marijuana. Justice J.L. Menzies said he believed medical evidence from Lamprea's doctor that the man was a drug abuser with a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Provincial police officer Andrew Houston pulled Lamprea over for allegedly speeding on Feb. 29, 2004, court heard. While obtaining his licence and registration, Houston noticed Lamprea was nervous and constantly tapping his fingers on the steering wheel. When he looked inside the vehicle, the officer spotted a plastic Tupperware container on the rear passenger-side floor. Houston questioned Lamprea, who admitted he had just finished a joint. The officer then found bags containing 746 grams of marijuana inside the vehicle. A key part of Smith's defence was that police didn't find debt lists, scales or other devices to measure marijuana -- meaning he didn't intend to sell the drugs. Lamprea testified that he smoked about seven to 10 grams of marijuana per day. "If ( the officer ) had seen the joints inside my pocket, he would have realized these are not toothpick-sized joints," he said. Lamprea was fined $5,000 on the possession of marijuana charge.

| Okay, I can understand smoking that much, especially if you had a medical reason to do so (I can certainly see smoking that much if you had muscular dystrophy or something equally debilitating). But why, oh why, did he need to carry it in his car? I dunno, maybe he just purchased it I guess and hadn't gotten it home yet.

| Sounds like the guy is a little fruit-loopy to me. If you going to carry around 3/4 a kilogram of pot, please throw a towel or blanket or something over it. And dont speed, thats a bad idea too. |

| Yeah, speeding with weed in the car, especially that much of it (good God), is just being stupid. MMJ registration card or no, it's just asking for trouble. |

| OK......How smart is this person? Carrying that much ganja+speeding+smoking a joint=DUMBA$$. Why not wait to get home and smoke a joint. He probably would of just got a ticket if he was not high when he was pulled over. But I guess he needed his medicine(sp). |

| Assuming an average joint is about 0.75 grams, that's about 1000 joints worth. If he smokes 1 joint an hour every hour that he's awake, and if he's awake 16 hours a day, it would take him two months to go through that amount. I dunno about the rest of you, but my weed starts tasting pretty stale long before 2 months has passed. I guess you could get better duration if you vacuum sealed it in a mason jar, or froze it or something -- but still, I find it hard to believe that all this was for personal use. Especially since he was transporting it! But, more power to him if he was able to convince the judge it was for personal use. =) |
