Default CAN: Vancouver Police Raid Pot Business

Vancouver Police Raid Pot Business
Vancouver Sun | 07/29/2005

VANCOUVER -- Police have raided a business run by the head of the B.C. Marijuana Party in Vancouver -- and looks like the raid was ordered by the U.S.

Leader Marc Emery was not at the marijuana seed store when it was raided by police earlier today.

But police say he has been arrested in Halifax.

A store employee says police arrived with a search warrant shortly before 11 am.

The charges outlined in the warrant indicate it is on behalf of the American government.

Emery and two other people are accused of conspiracy to manufacture marijuana, conspiracy to distribute seeds, and money laundering.

I am sort of in shock over this incident right now. It just seemed like they were not going to get caught after so much time without problems. Anyways a more lengthy article is already on the que for tomorrow, and I will keep a look out for other articles on the subject. I have to go grab a new keyboard, some of my keys broke when I spilled water everywhere

Edit: What I am also curious about is what will happen to pot-tv. I wonder how Emery is holding up. He was a very outspoken advocate, but one thing I always noticed about him is he sometimes took the rhetoric too far by saying marijuana enhances certain activities that it would really impair. That type of thing would hurt the movement in the U.S., but I think it was always helpful in Canada somehow.

I'm not that familiar with Marc Emery's public pronouncements. Could you expand on that sentence or point me in the right direction?

Oh man, I've been tring to get in contact with Marc Emery. Now its going to be near impossible. Pot-tv must stay alive, that is what I wanted to talk to him about. Im writing a script for a cartoon, and I was hoping he would be able to connect me with some cartoonists. Hopefully there will be a news story up soon on Pot TV.
Whats this about money laundering?

Buzzby I think he was talking about Pot enhancing sex.

Well on expanding, I think you would find what you are looking for by watching pot-tv.net. You can find numerous news interviews with him. One interview comes to mind where Marc was claiming that marijuana enhances everyone's ability to drive a car on Canadian National News. I think saying that is misleading. The studies I have seen show impairment but compensation for the impairment since the user is aware that he is impaired unlike alcohol. Although this may "enhance" some people's driving abilities, I think it is much too far of a generalization to say that every pot user drives better under the influence of marijuana.

I have watched him off and on the last couple of years. I think he energized the Canadian reform movement, so I am by no means dogging him. He is a good guy, I wish him the best of luck.

I think he'll weather the storm just fine. He's used to being arrested in his efforts to legalize marijuana in Canada. I'll be wondering what this will do for his business and others like it in Canada.

Marc might not be okay. The US government is going to try to extradite M.E. to the USA on federal drug charges where could face 10 years to life. For selling seeds. The DEA just went on TV and accused him of being a drug dealer, the whole pot TV cannabis culture and mj party are funded by seed sales, and now they are being investigated for money laundering. If you ordered anything from cannabis culture, mags, seeds, anything they may have your name

"think he'll weather the storm just fine. He's used to being arrested in his efforts to legalize marijuana in Canada. I'll be wondering what this will do for his business and others like it in Canada."

Well the days of sending seeds to the USA are finished. No one is going to go do hard time for selling 40 bucks worth of seeds. If you got them and you live down there hold on to them.

Vancouver marijuana store raided

VANCOUVER (CP) - Police raided a business run by the head of the B.C. Marijuana Party on Friday based on a search warrant that was requested by the U.S. government.

Marc Emery, the leader of the party, was not at the store when it was raided but Chris Bennett, who witnessed the raid and is an employee of Pot TV, said Emery had been arrested in Halifax.

Authorization to conduct the raid was made Thursday by Associate Chief Justice Patrick Dohm of the B.C. Supreme Court under the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Act.

Several officers, some in plain clothes, some in uniform, raided the marijuana seed and paraphernalia store on West Hastings Street in downtown Vancouver owned by Emery, who the search warrant also described by his alias "The Prince of Pot."

The search warrant named Emery, Gregory Williams and Michelle Rainey-Fenkarek. Bennett said Williams was taken into police custody at the store on Friday while Rainey-Fenkarek was arrested at her home on Thursday night.

Police were not immediately available to comment on whether any arrests had been made.

The store, named Toker's Bowl, is adjacent to the New Amsterdam Cafe where people have been smoking marijuana openly for years.

Several people gathered outside the store to protest the raid, many holding anti-American signs.

Police sealed off the store and covered the windows with paper while they conducted their search.

The search warrant sets out a long list of requests made by the United States to the Vancouver police department.

In the warrant, the U.S. alleges that those named in it have conspired to manufacture marijuana, conspired to distribute marijuana seeds and conspired to engage in money laundering.

The warrant requests that police seize cash and receipts, client lists and other records identifying purchasers of goods from Emery, and employee records, including applications for employment.

It also asks for business and company incorporation documents, leases, rental agreements, computers, hard drives, diskettes and CD-ROMS
