Default KY: Pot is this "marijuana belt" state's number one cash crop

Number one tobacco producer is also a leader in producing a safer smoke
Amanda Van Benschoten | ChallengerNKY.com | 7/31/2005

COVINGTON - Kentucky's fertile soil and mild climate have helped the state become a leading national producer of tobacco - and marijuana, now the state's number one cash crop.

Kentucky belongs to the "marijuana belt," a region of the Southeast U.S. with ideal soil and climate for growing the cannabis plant, from which marijuana is derived. Kentucky and Tennessee are vying for the dubious honor of being the third-largest producer of marijuana in the nation, behind California and Hawaii, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

"Most of the marijuana grown in Kentucky isn't sold in Kentucky," said Northern Kentucky Drug Strike Force Director Jim Liles. "Most of the marijuana that we see up here comes from Arizona, California or Mexico. You can go down to Mexico and buy a pound of marijuana for $200 or $300, and bring it up here and sell it for $1,500 to $1,800."

Just as Kentucky tobacco use is among the highest in the nation, marijuana is the most abused illegal drug statewide and in NKY. The Drug Strike Force seized 1,580 marijuana plants and approximately 56 pounds of marijuana in Boone, Campbell, Grant and Kenton counties during 2004. There were 2,070 marijuana-related arrests in Kentucky during 2004, according to the Kentucky State Police "Crime in Kentucky - 2004" report.

Unlike most other commonly abused drugs, marijuana is a depressant - not a stimulant. The leaves, stems and seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant are smoked in cigarettes, cigars, pipes and water pipes called bongs, or sometimes mixed with food. The active chemical, Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), induces relaxation and heightens the senses. Marijuana also impairs coordination and slows down the way the brain processes information. High doses can induce hallucinations. Abusing marijuana can lead to cancer, respiratory problems and memory damage.

Its an all arounder, not a depressant, nobody smokes stems and seeds, and doesn't cause cancer, if anything it reduces cancer risks...

what is the actual classification of marijuana?
some people claim it to be a stimulant, others a depressant.
the effects you feel definately depends on what kind you smoke, as some definately have an 'up' high, while others a much more relaxing effect.
but there has to be some underlying classification.
for example, alcohol, depending on dosage and tolerance, can lead to anything from a rush of energy to passing out, but it is a depressant no matter what.
where does pot fit in?

Default Will the herb hatred ever end?

THC does NOT cause cancer. Not even "high" doses of it. And people certainly do NOT smoke seeds and stems.... or suffer memory impairments.

And what is the deal with this? "Slows down the way the brain processes information" That looks alot like "Pot makes you dumb". Uh-huh... well at least they admited that it heightens the senses... :spark:

Actually, while still not proven, recent research indicates that marijuana may actually reduce cancer risks. this is coming from the same study (funded by our friends in the White House, ironically) that has proven there is no corallation between smoked marijuana and cancers of the lungs and throat. basically, a govt employed scientist proved that the 'cancer" myth that has circulated about marijuana is entirely false, while the govt was hoping he'd prove their myths to be fact.. the same study showed that it may actually reduce the risk of cancer, but that more research would be needed to prove that. so, before spouting off that it "definitely does not REDUCE cancer risks" you should be aware of recent research.

Does this not make sense to anyone else? If Ky pot is 2 or 3 in the country...where does it all go? Why would people pay more for pot from Arizona, California or Mexico if they could grow it in state?

If most of the marijuana grown in Kentucky isn't sold in Kentucky, where is it sold? in Arizona? and then re-imported?

They must be smokin it all
