Default MI: Cops identify "Johnny Appleseed" of pot

Federal charges could be in store for man who planted over 4,000 seeds
Ken Kolker | The Grand Rapids Press | 8/2/2005

BENZIE COUNTY -- He's like Johnny Appleseed, only these are marijuana seeds he's spreading, and the cops are after him.

Deputies in this rural county said they've identified the man responsible for planting 4,279 marijuana plants that were seized by police on Monday.

Police said the plants -- some up to 8 feet tall -- are worth $1,000 each, with a value officers say is $4 million.

The seizure was the biggest ever in Benzie County -- nearly three times the amount pulled during a raid last year. Deputies said they believe the same man planted last year's record plot, though he wasn't charged in that case.

"What this guy's doing, he goes around, takes seeds, finds good soil, and he just spreads the seeds," said Benzie County Sheriff's Detective Tom Whale. "He comes back at a later date and harvests the plants."

Deputies are investigating the suspect, a man in his 40s who's been in the marijuana business for years, Whale said. They hope to charge him in federal court.

"He's been busted many times for the same kind of garbage," Whale said. "He makes a living doing it. We've got a few people up here, they do this for a living. They go to jail, get back out and do it again."

Whale said he got a tip from an informant of a large plot of marijuana growing in a clearing. The 350-acre piece of land is owned by a Detroit-area man who uses it for deer hunting, Whale said. The owner told police he didn't know about the marijuana.

Whale entered the woods on Monday with about 10 deputies, state police troopers and DNR officers. At one point, they buried the county's DARE car in pot.

Whale said they plan to destroy the marijuana, perhaps burning it in an incinerator in Traverse City.

FARMER ... could be wrong though, but that's what I think we call this Person.

Apparently a VERY GOOD FARMER...

Garbage, isn't that the stuff we also call pollution; so much of which comes from non renewable resources like fossil fuels?

This stuff's from PLANTS (euphisms include the terms: GRASS and WEED.)

They support themselves in a free market economy of supply and demand. What a concept. What a Country eh? You'd almost mistake it for a Democracy except for one small issue about the multiple arrests.

And now they want to pull Federal prosecution on this poor Dude.

Now if they do succeed in making him a Federal Case, this is a Federal Case worth paying some attention to.

Now to be fair and play "devil's advocate" for a moment, I took a look in the Benzie County, Michigan MLIVE Classified online today to see what a 40 year old agriculturalist could make in Benzie, Michigan -- say someone who was doing it for a few years and only now got caught. Benzie apparently is near Grand Rapids. I checked off the boxes for Farmer and Botanist in the classified section. Guess what? No jobs came up.

The State and possibly the Federal Governemnt interfereing with his right to earn a living because of a law that is not only wrong, but is outdated, irrelevant, and entirely politically incorrect

Now maybe it's me... Maybe because you know I do little reefer now and then. But this makes no sense to me!

And we don't even know his name. He's just Johnny Potseed...

God Bless You Man... Stay Safe!

Hugz,

Mama Budz

Cool um.. krekt me if I wrong....

But how is being compared to Johnny Appleseed a bad thing?

What's next?

"This Bastard's a regular Jesus Christ"...?

Johnny Appleseed was an American Hero. I'd give my aunt's dentures to be mentioned in the same sentence as such a luminary as Johnny!!!

We need like an orbital mass-detonation intercontinental ballistic seed-spreading device. Something that we can activate, and before any governments can do anything about it, the entire planet is covered in marijuana plants, every available square foot of open soil.

That would be sweet >=)

Thats what everyone should do! Regardless if you plan on harvesting the plant at a later date. Just start planting seeds EVERYWHERE! In open public though. On the side of Roads, in front of building's, in gardens, anywhere there is good soil and enough sunlight and hope the things grow! That is a good way to make a statement to the government I think. Sort of like a silent message that marijuana is a god given plant that will grow on its own and is never going away.

I used to just throw the seeds out into a feild or the side of the road, but now i only smoke dank, chronic whatever and those seeds are fairly uncommon and expensive in the U.S., If only i could find schwag i would, but for many a people its uneconomical and an inconvienance

I just imagine what it would be like to see weed growing wild on the side of the highway....A friend of mine from some foreign country, i forget which talk about growing up and how he learnd about pot.....His parents point to a plant growing wild and said that is marijuana

Johnny Appleseed's apples were not eaten, they were used to make hard cider. He was spreading the gift of alcohol throughout the new land. This guy was spreading the gift of marijuana!

Well look at alcohol prohibition, wasn't it said that a few Kennedy's made their money doing that?

Anything that is put on the black market some people will get in the buisness of, for us hard workers that get up early to go to work for 8 or more hrs a day and bust our asses, these people who grow marijuana commercially sell a few ounces or pounds and make a few grand while most of us have to work weeks or months for that money depending on how much we make at our jobs, not to mention getting taxed on top of it! They can't figure out why some people do this? lol

I agree, i could be wrong but i also think plants help give oxygen much like trees do.

Yea well they do the same with corn They don't consider growing pot to be related to farming? They plant the seeds like a farmer would and they harvest like a farmer would.

His crop was worth 4 million dollars. Talk about getting money back into the economy, anyone who owns a car dealership or is in real estate must love it when someone comes along and wants to pay cash instead of using a charge card.

Yup that shows that theres enough pot to go around.

Maybe someday some of these big growers will have robots to take care of the pot fields for them lol. They would do the harvesting and everything, they'd be programmed to do work and never open their mouth. I wonder how they would arrest a machine for cultivation, I could picture the cops trying to interrogate one

I was watching somethin on tv awhile back about new technology, they showed a robot that they claim will do house work, it would even talk to the people. It costs a lot of money, i forgot how much but i think it's more than the average car, now that i think of it, it might have costed close to a million dollars!

Johnny Potseed makes more sense than Johnny Appleseed. I have my doubts about that legend, at least about the details. Apples don't breed true. If you plants seeds from a Yellow Delicious the resulting tree could be anything. One out of 80,000 naturally occurring apple trees will produce edible apples. All eating apples are started from clones (cuttings) from these rare trees grafted onto generic root stock.

This has been a public service announcement. We now return you to the thread, which is already in progress.
