Feinstein, Republicans Call For Marijuana Crackdown
FoxReno.com | 08/01/2005

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and a group of Republican representatives called on the National Park Service Friday to crack down on illegal marijuana cultivation on public lands.

The group of legislators wrote, in a letter to Park Service Director Fran Mainella, "We are stunned by the fact that in 2004 alone, authorities seized 200,000 marijuana plants worth approximately $800 million in a single California county, Tulare County. Most of these marijuana plants were cultivated, presumably by individuals linked to Mexican drug cartels, in both the Sequoia National Park and Sequoia National Forest."

(BuzzNote: "Presumably" That means they really haven't got a clue. )

The letter went on to describe smuggling operations that utilized Joshua Tree National Park and Mojave National Preserve as "thoroughfares for marijuana drug smuggling into Mexico."

(BuzzNote: If we're sending the weed to Mexico why are they so worried about it? )

The legislators requested that the Park Service issue a report on a multi-year plan to resolve the problem, including an estimate of the extent of criminal activity, an estimate of the law enforcement needs to combat it and a plan to rehabilitate park resources damaged by marijuana plantations.

(BuzzNote: Let's see... We'll erect a 12-foot electrified chain link fence, topped with razor wire, around all the national parks and forests. We'll build guard towers every 50 yards and have them manned 24/7. We'll have sonic sensors so nobody can tunnel under the wall. Anyone wanting to enter the park will be required to submit to a strip search. a body cavity search, and have their vehicles disassembled down to the last bolt. Yeah! That ought to do it! )

Feinstein collaborated on the letter with U.S. Reps. Jerry Lewis, George Radanovich and Mary Bono, all Republicans from California. A copy of the letter also went to U.S. Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth.

(BuzzNote: I hope they're getting as much of a laugh out of this nonsense as I am! They can tear up all the plants they find, but there's no way they can stop people from planting them.)

and this is just from one county in one state....how about the rest of the US? To me this just represents the will of the people...the people want to smoke pot.....the US knows this .....the people have voted and passed laws decriminalizing pot, plus making it legal for the sick...... yet the US goverment comes right out to say tuff luck we don't care what you have voted for....or what you want.... it is still illeagal and you all are still goin to jail and we will take everything you have worked for your entire life and stick it in our pocket's while we laugh at you rotting in our jails....

Pround to be an American? My pride is dying fast on several levels......of the people , for the people , by the the people.....what a joke...it seems like every day brings forth the loss of another freedom....soon there will be no more freedoms to take away and then what?

To me this represents that around 5% of the population wants to smoke pot. In a democracy, 5% does not constitute the "will of the people".

US population = 300,000,000
Marijuana smokers = 15,000,000

15,000,000 / 300,000,000 = .05 = 5%

In that case, the will of the people are at least for decriminalization, even if they don't smoke Then again, the majority of Americans want to see the Creation story taught in science class

I'm sorry, Buzzby and to everyone else here who actually BELIEVES the statistics presented by a government who enjoys lying to its citizens.
15,000,000 pot smokers in America? I think NOT!
GROSSLY UNDERESTIMATED or another pathetic attempt by NIDA or whoever came up with this figure to avoid the TRUTH!
I would bet there are AT LEAST 50-70 MILLION Americans who smoke pot on both a regular basis as well as an infrequent one.
If these numbers ARE more accurate and I believe that they are.....this means 20% of Americans currently smoke pot from time to time....which I believe is quite likely.
The government would NEVER wish to announce a figure like this if they even did know it to be true!
Why?
Well, just think about that question and ALL the ramifications to each and every possible answer!
IMO....it would PROVE without a shred of doubt just how unpopular the laws truly are and expose to the rest of the world America's pathetic FUTILITY and WASTE of money and resources to combat something so ingrained in American culture after all these years......basically, they would feel FORCED to admit defeat and probably admit they have no true legitimate reason to keep marijuana as a Controlled substance, ILLEGAL and continue wasting money and resources to enforce laws which cannot effectively be enforced......FINALLY realizing the HUGE LOSS of potential tax revenue by keeping it illegal instead of regulated and distributed LEGALLY.....generating enormous profits instead!
INSANITY, EMBARRASSMENT and STUPIDITY....IS what they would be forced to SEE themselves as for perpetuating their "war" on marijuana for so long.
They could'nt handle the reality of the TRUTH!

Do you have any basis for this belief? If your unverifiable speculation happens to be true then there are 3 to 5 times as many Americans who smoke pot and are totally indifferent to its legalization! Utterly disgusting. The three major pro-legalization orgs have a total membership of 60,000 and function on a total of $8,000,000 a year. The ONDCP's expenditures on anti-pot propaganda are in the hundreds of millions.

What are these 70,000,000 people thinking of?

keeping their snug lifestyle, not many smokers see legalization as an obtainable goal, alot aren't active in politics at all and some of them are still minors etc. etc. etc.

70 million might be a little high

In the mean time, we'll focus on beating up the state legislatures to decriminalize, leagalize and regulate marijuana for adult use. Good luck to the Federal Government with your hatred of Cannabis users. NOTE: Pissing in the can get you all wet and smelly you insolent hating bastards.

Damage?

Let's see.... the soil has been aerated by the cannabis' extensive root system which also provides fertilization to next years plants...nope that can't be it...

oh, oh, the air! oh...wait.... cannabis improves air quality and reduces pollution. Hm.

Damage? What are they going to do to reverse it, plow salt into the field?

What happens in these large grow ops in the national parks is you have a couple of migrant workers, paid by some Mexican drug lords to care for the crop. So these workers camp out near the garden and end up trashing the surrounding area. Thats where the clean up comes from.
