Default CO: Telluride May Tickle Tokers

Telluride May Tickle Tokers
Ellen Miller | Rocky Mountain News | 08/03/2005

Enforcement of adult marijuana possession laws may soon go up in smoke in Telluride.

The town council voted 6-0 Tuesday, with one member absent, to place an ordinance on the Nov. 1 ballot saying that prosecuting adults for small amounts of marijuana be the town's "lowest enforcement priority."

Organizers of the initiative drive gathered signatures and momentum to let voters decide the issue in the laid-back ski town, where San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters, a Libertarian, is no fan of the War on Drugs.

"We're pleased that the council gave us pretty good confirmation of our petition drive,'' said Ernest Eich, one of the organizers.

The local group was joined by Sensible Colorado, a nonprofit that lobbies for easing restrictions on pot.

Just for those in the raise hell and put it in their faces camp, I'm real familiar with Telluride and with the Sheriff there, Sheriff Bill Masters. He's a LEAP member as well as a member of the advisory board and a long time opponent of the drug war, I'd have to check if he was a founder or not but if he wasn't he was there almost from the start. What he's doing there is what the rest of us should be doing as well, change from within the system.

Here's a quick bio on him, and this I think is how we'll win in the end. The cops don't have to be against us and some aren't, if we'd quit assuming they are the enemy we can add a few more to the membership of groups that are trying to change things. Nobody gives ground under attack, but they sometimes do if you just explain things to them. Have for me.
