Default OK: Sheriff's deputy and jailer given paid leave after being accused of using marijuana and smuggling it into county jail

Local prosecutors have not yet determined whether to charge law enforcers with crime
Donna Hales | Muskogee Phoenix | 8/16/2005

Out-of-county investigators will probe whether a Cherokee County deputy and jailer on paid leave after marijuana and drug paraphernalia were seized from their home Thursday night will be charged with a crime, officials said Monday.

Deputy Dusty Ryals and Jailer Lynn Trammel are under investigation for allegedly smuggling drugs into the Cherokee County Jail, as well as possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

District Attorney Richard Gray, chief prosecutor for Cherokee, Adair, Wagoner and Sequoyah counties, said he is bringing in one of his investigators from Wagoner County, Jim Jones, to investigate.

"We're going to try to get to the bottom of it," Gray said.

Cherokee County Sheriff Norman Fisher said he and Gray talked Monday and he believes the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation also will be asked to send in an investigator who does not normally work Cherokee County.

"They (Ryals and Trammel) are denying taking drugs into the jail," Fisher said.

The chief said Ryals also said the drugs found at the men's home were drugs he took into evidence and that because the lock on his locker at work was broken his supervisor had advised him to take them home in order not to break the chain of custody.

Friday, Fisher said after talking to one of his investigators that he understood Ryals and Trammel "were using it - I don't think they were selling it."

Gray said one question to be answered is why the drugs, if they were evidence, weren't left in the sheriff's evidence room.

Gray said the initial investigation also showed a trace of methamphetamine on bongs - or water pipes - found in the home of Ryals and Trammel.

Ryals has worked as a deputy since January. Fisher said Trammel has been employed four or five weeks.

Drug War = Prohibition = CORRUPTION!
So they get a paid vacation while an investigation takes place?
Something sooooo very wrong with this whole picture!
Guess if I was a true drug addict with a fairly clear criminal record.....I SHOULD become a cop.
Easy access to all the dope I could ever want and money too!
IF I get caught.....no big deal.....on paid vacation so I just spend some of that cash I seized off some dealer, collect my paychecks and lounge in Hawaii for a while and work on my tan.
Must be nice being ABOVE the law!

Blazing up the evidence found would be a good way to get to the bottom of it

I'm not defending these two in any way, but there are a couple of comments that maybe could use some clarification.

So they get a paid vacation while an investigation takes place?
Something sooooo very wrong with this whole picture!

Is it really that unusual if you think about it? If you got arrested tomorrow, would you immediately lose your job? Most people wouldn't. They might lose it after being convicted, but not just for being investigated.

Since they aren't being fired without due process, they still get paid........but putting them back in a position of responsibility would be irresponsible. So they get suspended with pay.

Must be nice being ABOVE the law!

Apparently they aren't.

You forget something..........you'd only be charged with the possession, misdemeanors. These guys are looking at possible felony charges, which is why the investigation will take a little longer.

They simply need time to investigate and disprove their bullsh*t story about storing evidence at home. Once they disprove it, they will get hammered.
