| This Administration Can't Even Grow Good Pot Adam Ash | Blogcritics.org | 08/27/2005 God is in the details, children. Let's check up on a really modest activity undertaken by our government -- an activity that doesn't take that much due diligence to do well. Let's check up on something that thousands of Americans do in their backyards and window boxes. Let's check up on growing pot. Yes, the government grows marijuana for research purposes. But guess what -- it wouldn't get a fly stoned. Read this: Lyle Craker, a professor of plant and soil sciences at the University of Massachusetts, asked an administrative judge to overrule the federal Food and Drug Administration so he could grow marijuana for F.D.A.-approved research projects by other scientists. Researchers who want marijuana have only one legal source: a crop grown in Mississippi and dispensed by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Scientists say they need an alternative partly because the government's marijuana is of such poor quality - too many seeds and stems ... Scientists can't do good studies until they get good marijuana. Phillip Alden, a writer living in Redwood City, Calif. told me marijuana eased excruciating pains in his fingertips, controlled nausea and enabled him to avoid the wasting syndrome that afflicts AIDS patients who are unable to eat enough food. But Mr. Alden said only some kinds of marijuana worked - not the weak variety provided by the federal government, which he smoked during a research study. "It was awful stuff. They started out with a very low-grade plant, rolled it up with stems and seeds, and then freeze-dried it so that they probably ruined any of the THC crystals. All it did was give me headaches and bronchitis. The bronchitis got so bad I had to drop out of the study." --NY Times article. Now listen. I'm can be as useless as a toad without a tongue, but give me the money, and I'll grow you some *****in' pot. What does it take? Some good seeds, easily obtainable anywhere in northern California, some OK soil, some good sun, and some water. Not too difficult. But this here Administration can't even do that right. The home-grown of a Mississippi teenager beats what an entire Administration, with the full resources of the federal government, can't get together. Where's their pride in a good honest day's work -- in growing an excellent crop of fine weed? Is it too much to ask? The logic is inescapable. If they can't grow good pot, how can you expect them to fight a good war?

| It's not that the National Institute on Drug Abuse can't grow good pot - they don't want to. If they grew good pot it would be more effective as a medicine and cause fewer lung problems from excess smoking. They don't want the only pot available for research to actually be useful. If they wanted to allow a fair test of marijuana so that it could get FDA approval they could grow perfect hydroponic weed. By having a monopoly on the only legal weed in the US, growing crappy marijuana, and by denying even that to any researchers whose goal is to show benefits or lack of harmfulness they make sure that there is no chance that it'll be rescheduled out of Schedule I. They're the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Like any bureaucracy, they don't want to risk losing any power or authority.

| I go to the University of Mississippi where they grow it and my phsycology prof. told us that the highest % of thc you can find in weed on the streets is proably up to 30% at best. He said within the last few years at the marijuana facilities they have gotten it up to 50% thc he then added "its that real one hitter quitter" thought id share |

| Somehow I just don't believe that. Not at all. You're telling me a naturally growing, read, not modified or extracted, strain of marijuana is producing 50% THC? That's just not true. |

| agreed, even the hightest quality strains produced in holland only get to around 20% max. Your teacher is full of Sheet man, not that most of the ones that I had weren't either.

| I have found some info. on another site dedicated to cultivators and there was one in particular who stated that he had managed to grow a particular strain of pot and had it tested for its THC content which indicated a level at about 30%. I wouldn't be surprised if there is some pot with THC content reaching the 30% level now and several strains are more regularly exceeding 20% THC content. I highly doubt that marijuana plants containing much higher THC levels (40% or higher) will be all that likely though and levels of THC in that range or even much higher would have to remain a reserved spot for hash, etc. IMO. But, even the fact that plants are now being cultivated and achieving THC levels well above 20%.....possibly even above 30%.......IS truly amazing! If I ever smoke some weed with THC levels that high.....I only HOPE I don't have too many plans and would probably only want to take a couple tokes and see if I fall down the stairs or something. ![]()
