| Drug raid causes man to 'wake up' Shepparton News | 9/7/2005 After his home was raided in May, a man charged with using and trafficking marijuana gave up the drug, Shepparton Magistrates' Court heard yesterday. The man produced a pathology report to back up his claim, saying he would never get into trouble again. Marty Joyce, of Coe Crt, Mooroopna, was charged with trafficking, cultivating, possessing and using marijuana, and using the proceeds of crime. The 25-year-old received a onemonth suspended jail sentence. Magistrate Terry Wilson said he was impressed with the man's efforts to "wake up" after the drug raid. The court heard police searched Mr Joyce's home on May 19, when they found five plastic snap-lock bags containing cannabis, digital scales, packs of plastic bags, tins of cannabis and money. In the rear yard, seven marijuana plants were also found. When police interviewed Mr Joyce, he said he bought cannabis for himself, and shared it with friends. Defence lawyer Joe Mammone said his client had been smoking marijuana since he was 15 on an almost daily basis. The court heard Mr Joyce had not smoked marijuana since the raid. Pathology tests given to the court supported the statement. Mr Joyce, who pleaded guilty, received a one-month sentence, wholly suspended for 12 months. "For someone who's never been in trouble, it's been a real wake-up call," Mr Wilson said. "I'm impressed you've managed to give up the drug as well."

| He smoked pot since he was 15 so they probably thought he had an addiction I bet he quit without going through withdraw symptoms, no rehab was even needed. It just shows that it doesn't matter how long people smoke pot for, some can just quit whenever they want. |

| Unfortunately that's the same case with alcohol and tobacco; some can quit without a problem. My problem with it is that I'm sure in many places this story is being used as a success story of prohibition. And that's just sad. "Oh god! Look, we turned one away from the darkside by criminalizing his lifestyle choices!! Thou shalt not smoketh the marihuana! Victory!! It's working! Those dope fiends underestimated us!" :spark: Sorry? I wasn't paying attention to you. I stopped caring when you said "Oh".
