| THE BLUNT TRUTH ABOUT MARIJUANA: Five Facts Parents Must Know Wendy Campbell | Eurweb.com | 10/01/2005 Every day 4,700 kids try marijuana for the first time. In fact, marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug among America's youth. Unfortunately, a lot of American teens, and their parents, continue to see marijuana as harmless. The National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign created this quiz for parents to test their knowledge about the risks associated with marijuana. How much do you know? QUESTION 1: Ecstasy is more popular than marijuana among kids today. True or False? False. Far more youth use marijuana than any other drug. Among kids who use drugs, approximately 60 percent use marijuana only. QUESTION 2: Marijuana is not addictive. True or False? False. Research shows that marijuana is addictive. In fact, more teens enter treatment with a primary diagnosis of marijuana dependency than for all other illegal drugs combined. QUESTION 3: Smoking one marijuana joint is as harmful as smoking five cigarettes. True or False? True. In fact, smoking four joints is like smoking an entire pack. QUESTION 4: Smoking weed only makes people feel mellow. True or False? False. Marijuana can cause paranoia, panic attacks, anxiety and depression. Heavy marijuana use has even been linked with increased aggression, rebelliousness and violent behavior. QUESTION 5: There's not much parents can do to stop their kids from trying marijuana. True or False? False. Research suggests that parents are the most powerful influence on their children when it comes to drugs. In fact, kids who learn about the risks of marijuana from their parents are 36 percent less likely to use it. | QUESTION 1: Ecstasy is more popular than marijuana among kids today. True or False? False. Far more youth use marijuana than any other drug. Among kids who use drugs, approximately 60 percent use marijuana only. This is a good thing: Ecstacy is a potent hallucinogen with the potential of producing fatalities. Marijuana is one of the least toxic substances on Earth. QUESTION 2: Marijuana is not addictive. True or False? False. Research shows that marijuana is almost as addictive as coffee. In fact, more teens enter treatment with a primary diagnosis of marijuana dependency than for all other illegal drugs combined, generally as an alternative to jail and a criminal record. QUESTION 3: Smoking one marijuana joint is as harmful as smoking five cigarettes. True or False? True. In fact, smoking four joints is like smoking an entire pack. Of course, there is no research showing a connection between smoking marijuana and cancer, the greatest risk from smoking cigarettes. Some research suggests that smoking marijuana reduces cancer risk for people who also smoke tobacco. QUESTION 4: Smoking weed only makes people feel mellow. True or False? False. Marijuana can cause paranoia, panic attacks, anxiety and depression. Heavy marijuana use has even been linked with increased aggression, rebelliousness and violent behavior. In 38 years of smoking I've never witnessed a violent reaction with people using only marijuana.

| Most parents are either in the baby boomer generation or that generation's kids. That means they either experienced the original reefer madness themselves, or they were raised by parents who did. Conclusion: Parents are much more likely to believe government propaganda than today's generation of kids. Which means the kids have an uphill battle of convincing their parents AND Congress that smoking dope isn't as bad as, say, binge drinking.

BTW, the original reefer madness was in the 1920s, not the 1960s. The film "Reefer Madness" was revived in the 60s and was met with cheers and laughter by college audiences who were often passing joints in the theater. Quote:
