BOSTON--It appears that aging, overweight, tobacco smokers who smoke marijuana and have sex may experience a heightened anxiety and increase in the chance of heart attack while worrying about being arrested and incarcerated over the ridiculous marijuana laws.

If you had a very week heart then yes , smoking weed could set off another , but ,

so could , walking down the street , riding a bike , jogging , seeing a pretty lady , etc etc .

Has anyone else noticed that all these studies use the words "five times" when talking about pot doing something to someones health?

At one time we were told that people who smoke marijuana are at 5 times greater risk of coming down with cancer than someone who smokes cigarettes.

If someone is obese and uses marijuana and has a heart attack, do they blame the marijuana and not the fact that the person was over weight and their cholestrol was through the roof?

9 out of 124 people have a heart attack and they blame pot

They also talk of people having a heart attack a hour after smoking pot. People are usually high for about a hour before the pot wears off, if the pot does cause a increase in heart beat then how do they figure the person is having a heart attack a hour later and not while high when their heart is still beating faster? If someone can have a heart attack like from just smoking pot then i'm going to guess that they will have a heart attack if they attemt to go for a run or lift weights, have sex, go on roller coasters, or do anything else that increases heart rate. Could it be that these 9 people out of 124 were just really un healthy/weak, irregular heart beats maybe!

I will also say that 9 out of 124 people is a small amount compared to the amount of people in the whole U.S if not the whole world who smoke pot.

If some people with weak hearts have to watch out for anxiety, pot can cause anxiety so i can see how that could put someone at risk for a heart attack. With what i just said, that still has to do with someone having a weak heart in my opinion.

vladimir: not saying that this is any conclusive evidence, but my heart does tend to hurt more after smoking pot and actually also after smoking cigarettes. maybe it's just smoking in general, but it is probably just me.

I'll take your word for it but would inhaling the smoke be more of causing some type of heart burn? Sometimes when people take a hit they get the smoke in their chest that seems to cause some heart pain.

Not trying to go off topic but what about caffeine? When people drink soda or drink one coffee after another i'm sure that raises their heart beat too but no one is saying that these people drank a cup of coffee a hour before having a heart attack or within the time they had one. I have heard of caffeine causing heart problems. As soon as they say it about pot though, they throw it in as a another reason to keep it banned

Does anyone have a link to the original study, or know the title, journal name, author, date, etc?

I cannot comment on the conclusions of a journalist without having read the original. The peer-reviewed is the only source I trust, and lately I've even been losing faith in that.

We have previously reported that cocaine is associated with a nearly 24-fold increase in the risk of myocardial infarction onset in the hour after use.

So one person uses cocaine, uses weed, and has sex all at the same time, and what do we blame: THE REEFER.

Yea cocaine and sex could never give someone a heart attack, it's always the marijuana. What's really sad is a lot of people that read this study would probably be in support of marijuana being responsible for heart problems.
