Default NV: Marijuana Proponents' Hopes Grow For Nevada Initiative

Marijuana Proponents' Hopes Grow For Nevada Initiative
KRNV | 11/19/2005

Buoyed by the approval of a similar measure by Denver voters, marijuana proponents say they're growing more confident about the chances for success next year of a Nevada ballot initiative that would allow adults to possess an ounce of pot.

Neal Levine of Citizens to Regulate and Control Marijuana says he thinks the November 1st vote to legalize marijuana in Denver in a sign that "the mainstream" electorate now supports adults' private use of pot.

Because of a successful petition drive by his group last year, Nevadans will be faced with a similar question on the November 2006 election ballot.

A November 2002 ballot measure that would have legalized three ounces of marijuana was shot down by a wide margin in Nevada.

Law enforcement authorities from across the state spoke out against the latest marijuana proposal when it was debated at the legislature in March, saying it would send the wrong message to young people.

Default Wrong message to the young people?

Yeah, because a gambling state with legalized prostitution is the perfect message to young people

Cool I'm Confused

Even if the initiative passed, you still couldn't get a job in a casino.... so , not sure what a win would mean, to the average worker..... I wish we could stop the testing bastards....

When you wish upon a star, makes no difference where you are....ooopps, let me put down the skinny...

I agree the real danger is the testing industry... However the med community is addressing this issue.. At current with Californians dealt a depressing blow, in a loss of a court case challenging workplace testing standards, Oregonians await a decision in a similar case being heard by their supreme court...

How this all affects me is as a med patient from WA State I have now had my CDL privileges revoked for testing positive for THC in a pre-employment test... Directly violating RCW 69.51a Washington State Medical Marijuana Act, which states "Any person meeting the requirements appropriate to his or her status under this chapter shall be considered to have engaged in activities permitted by this chapter and shall not be penalized in any manner, or denied any right or privilege, for such actions."

This is after in 2003, following a failed drug test (THC and cannabidiols) for a pain management program, my Labor and Industries claim was closed... When does the insanity stop people? At what point will you take the time to write your congressman? After you’re a victim like me....

Default Is legalization near?

I really hope this initiative passes. I'm part of the UC Santa Barabara NORML chapter. We are getting a proposition on the ballot for 2006 similar to the proposition that just passed in Denver. The polls all indicate strong support. When asked questions like "Should marijuana be treated like alcohol?" and "If this propostion were on the ballot would you vote in favor of it?" people responded for marijuana in 54-70%! There are 5 other propositions like these that are going to be on the ballot in other California cities. (I think it's five.)

If these pass then there will be a push for legalization on the ballot for California in 2008. If California and Nevada both legalize marijuana, other states will surely follow suit.

Well...it would certainly make it an even more popular vacation spot.

That supports the local economy...

And while you couldn't get a job as a dealer or croupier -- there are a lot of other jobs to be had in a thriving economy.
